New York L 1926 and 1991 Launch Sale

They are indeed pretty different. Overall, I actually prefer the 1926 model (so far), which is surprising to me since I generally go for a very modern and clean sound. But there's something about this one that just feels very "right" to me. I can see using it in a pretty wide variety of contexts. I think it might even fit well into some old-school hip hop tracks I'm working on. Funny enough.

EDIT: Realize I didn't actually offer any helpful differentiation! Really, they just have very different sounds to them, surprisingly so. The variables are probably immeasurably numerous and subtle, but generally I hear the '90s model as more "in-your-face" and the '20s model as more "restrained," although both are highly tweakable. I'd recommend grabbing them both, or at least demoing both and keeping whichever you prefer... it'll undoubtedly end up being very personal, as piano libraries tend to inevitably be.
Thanks for your reply. I better get them both.

Yea, I'd expect it to work fine, library is installed on the internal SSD so I doubt it's a speed issue. It's more playable standalone but completely unusable in cubase 12/13 even in an empty project
Have you messed with the RAM setting? By default, the RAM is set to "low" which means it uses less ram but relies on disk streaming more, which will cause more dropouts on some system.

If you set your RAM setting to "High" you should be able to get more voices before it starts to choke, but loading the samples will take a bit longer and it will use more RAM.

Also, if the plugin is open for a while, the OS can start taking what's loaded into RAM and sticking it in virtual memory, which is quite a bit slower. If you hit the "Reload Samples" button at the top, it will force the samples back into a state that they can be read faster.

I had experienced a bit of clicking as well, and that went away when I upped the RAM usage (which I'm very happy is so easy to find in the UI).

Anyone else find these pianos to be massive CPU hogs?

I can only play a few notes before they start glitching, Mac Studio M1 Max
Yes, I’m getting cpu spikes with them both on out of the box settings in Logic on a Mac Studio M1.

I haven’t had a chance to explore further yet but I’ll report back what I find.

No issues with CPU with the AAX plugin on windows. It's most certainly not a CPU hog as I can push the voice numbers practically as high as I want. I'm using a Thinkpad X270 with a dual core i5-6300U, which is a lot less powerful than what most people here use, and I think that speaks for the plugin's efficiency.

AAX plugins usually seem to do worse in terms of CPU usage for me (at least I think so) and I'd expect performance to be even better in REAPER.

Does the physical modelling make this more realistic (or, more importantly (but more subjectively), more musical...) for fast passages than the other available sample-based 6 foot grands?

If this sale runs again next year I'll almost certainly buy the bundle, but I'm reluctant to go further over-budget. Does Boz Digital allow license transfers for this? (When going over-budget it seems fiscally responsible to limit myself to things that would have some theoretical resale value, even though I've never bothered selling anything.)

They are currently on sale at Audio Deluxe. I just purchased the 1926 L for 19 dollars plus an extra 10% discount from Audio Deluxe and every purchase gets a free MAutopanMB from Melda as a gift. One the the best bargains ever. Boz has created a beautiful instrument. I am very impressed by it.

I'm also getting massive CPU overload spikes with the L 1926, sometimes quite a bit after I stopped playing while voice count is dropping. I have not experienced such extreme and recurring spikes with other sampled piano's. RAM settings don't make much of a difference.
The plugin gets a lot more stable after use, which can take 5+ minutes.
Seems like a software issue to me...
Im using Cubase and the plugin is installed on an M.2 SSD drive.
Otherwise, nice piano!! :)

I am experiencing sudden spikes using the L 1926 in Studio One 5 but it doesn't happen all the time and it is still a lovely piano. Maybe there will be an update that addresses the sudden spike issue.

Have they fixed the pedal voice stealer yet?

(If you want to test hold down the sustain pedal, play a loud note followed immediately by the same note but very quiet - the loud note will cut off. Works even better if you do it with intervals or chords.)
