IK released Pianoverse piano virtual instrument

I have tested both the 280VC and Fazioli extensively, and I'm really surprised that there isn't more widespread coverage of the many issues plaguing the unevenness/playability/sour notes/ugly resonances that make these pianos liabilities for recordings(the reason I bought them).

Far and away the words problem is C#4 on the Bosendorfer. When playing lightly, around p thought mf, it's a very prominent PWANNNGGG. when you play a scale with that C#, it stands out like a sore thumb. When you try to voice a chord or use inner movement involving that note, forget about it. it's BRUTAL.

The Fazioli has a few high-pitched ringing when sustaining some single notes. most noticeable to me is F#4.

On both instruments, the treble octaves, C5-G6, that range, the volumes are so uneven when playing piano or pianissimo. sometimes you even lose entire notes. And yes I have a good controller, the roland A-88MkII which performs perfectly on all my other pianos VSTs. It's not a hardware issue.

I don't know if any of you tried the Una Corda function with a second pedal, but, while it sounds very good/very real, the playability is nonexistent. it's impossible to play lightly with una corda. unless you SLAM the treble keys, you lose notes playing chords and passages.

The only way around this currently is to jack the velocity offset to 10 and change the velo curve to something quite convex, but the tradeoff is, you lose control and timbre control at lighter dynamics. For loud pop music you can play them this way and they perform okay, but IMO the current way these products were released are pretty unacceptable.

It's a shame too because I really dig the realism and was looking forward to making records with these. As it stands they're liabilities.

I have a ticket open for that Bosendorfer's C#4. I'm hoping to get eyes on these other issues. It feels like these weren't even tested very much by players before launch. I find it really hard to believe these things would have been missed.

For those who haven't, try the una corda pedal, and play piano/pianissimo around the 5th octave and tell me you don't lose notes left and right from poorly regulated action.
I got the same bad issue with the C5 on the Steinway (+ 2 other keys). The sad thing is support says it sounds normal for their ears, see my other post for details:

Hi. I'm observing the same issue. Installed the samples in default location. But that was in C drive. Now I deleted those samples and I tried to reinstall the YF3 after selecting ask for location on product manager. I selected the custom location post clicking ok on the reinstall pop-up, nothing happens.
Yeah, there's a bug, it's impossible to reinstall any soundbank after the 1st installation.

For me, the Fazioli works the better than anything else I've found, because it has for my music the most pleasing, solid and consistent timbre of a solo instrument. And yes, I have most all the piano libraries. That said, before a final rendering, I sometimes do need to address a few notes here and there that stick out, as you say. I've been able to successfully do that by substituting a pitch-shifted note on a different track, shifting by a semitone only. But I do understand it's an entirely different matter if those notes disturb your feel of the playability of the instrument. I have an acoustic Hamburg D and it rings in certain notes... I just get used to it.
Yes the faziioli is definitely better in this regard than the bosie, except with una corda. Seriously throw the una corda on and just play piano/pianissimo naturally and youll see it is practically unusable.

The big ringing resonance in some of the faz notes can be notched out or dealt with bexausw they dont sound entirely unmusical, but that C#4 on the bosendorfer is REALLY bad.

Let me be clear. I do think these sound very "real" and detailed which was super exciting to me at first blush. Ans in some ways, it is these imperfections that make it sound real.

That said, there is a teadeoff when making a product desiged for people to use for music production. You shouldnt have to go into your performance and farm out bad notes with transposed punch ins. We shouldnt have to "deal woth" unusably sour notes.

If this were a recording studio, and we were making a record with a 280vc, we would have to call in a piano tech to fix these notes and irregularities with the action. Ik should have more carefully done this BEFORE making the products because the end user experience suffers a lot. These are major flies in the soup of what have the potential to be amazing products.

Well, I'm waiting on the Bösendorfer 200 as it's a library that I can't find anywhere else. Sometimes, a VI is more convenient than setting up a session for the one in my living room.

I played a 280 at NAMM last week. It was nice but didn't impress me as much as I expected.

I have no idea how many velocity layers there are — I have no interest in that sort of information as it’s totally meaningless, I find (provided there’s an adequate minimum of expressive dynamic differentiation of course) — but the one I bought a few hours ago plays rather nicely, I must say.

A couple of details that could be singled out for comment, a few other things I wished were included (instead of the ridiculous option to be able to make the instrument sound as if recorded in the Antartic, on Mars or on the bottom of the ocean — who comes up with this sillyness?), some default settings which, to my ears, are a bit wrong (for a natural pianosound and -behaviour, that is) and one or two other things which suprised me to have passed a beta-test, but apart from all that: a very decently sampled piano. Lower half of the keyboard I would even call outstanding. (Upper half perhaps a fraction dead?) Really nice, full-bodied dimensionality to the sound as well, giving the instrument a presence you don’t often get from sampled pianos. Sufficient spatial possibilities too. And the whole different enough in sound and character from any other similarly branded sampled piano I own to guarantee it a permanent place among my platoon of virtual pianos.

€99 rather well-spent.

I have the Yamaha library. It cuts through a complex mix like a knife through. Wagyu tallow… with being remotely out of balance. In my experience, it is a very versatile library. Its price point is quite reasonable able given all one can accomplish with it. FWIW, I was a piano major, Frost School of Music, University of Miami.

For the Mac, this was finally fixed in v. 1.10.0 of the IK Project Manager a few weeks ago. I see that an update to 1.14 dropped in the last few days (first time I've fired it up since NAMM). Hopefully, this has been fixed for Windows, too.

The IK Project Manager and previous installation schemes were so bad for so long… I'm glad to see that these issues are being addressed. The Mac version is actually good now.

Good news! Thanks for the feedback! Do you know if they fixed the broken samples too?

I did the monthly for the first month and bought the Yamaha. Just a nice clean rich piano. Sits nicely in a mix. I like the upright but am waiting for the other upright to drop. before purchasing. Ditto the Steinway - the current one is not bad but I prefer the upright. Low end on the upright could use improvement but maybe that is how the original sounded. It's a bit thin down there especially for solo work. But mid and high range sit very nicely in a mix. I had to buy the Yamaha online - $99 everywhere but $129 at IK. Would be nice to know when the new pianos are expected to be released.
