Cringe YouTuber Shock Face Thumbnail Hall of Fame

I think I could make a great YouTube video out of this thread. :emoji_frowning:
Well, the shock face thumbnail made this my most successful video ever. It has flatlined now for some reason, but I’ve never seen that many views that quickly before.

Granted, there’s no control to compare it to, and it’s only been a couple of weeks since I decided to do more with my channel than just use it as a place to keep product walkthroughs.

Small numbers compared to the bigger channels, yes, but it’s even outperforming the previous video which had the words “free sample library” in the thumbnail and description, but no face. Go figure….

It's really well made vlog and YouTube really push this kind of content with good watch retention. I believe that early source of views was "suggested videos" pushed by YT hence the good results.

When YouTube premium went live several years ago (ad-free tier) I was one of the first in line, in part because I used YouTube so much for everything from research (gear, software, music theory etc) to actual work (like clients sending me references). At the time the premium was I think $7/mo and for as much value as I got out of it, was a no-brainer to avoid ads.

Fast-forward to now, I still use it a lot, but I have to say it's mostly crap these days. I'm not sure if things have changed (the algorithms encouraging more and more filler and sensationalism over quality information), or if I've simply grown out of it and gotten what I've needed. But it feels like 90% of the time when I'm trying to find something about hardware, software, or music theory, there's mostly fluff and no substance. At this point I feel like a dog returning to its own vomit.

That said, as with most services they are jacking up prices this month. Now it'll be something like $14/mo just to watch crappy videos without ads. Thinking now to save money and perhaps I'll feel even less motivated to waste my time on there if I have to watch crappy ads on top of it.
I had an email the other day from a company called Jelly Smack to get me to try out some AI content technology they're rolling out - (which I'm totally uninterested in and totally against) - The idea is, you ask AI what video to make, it then searches current trends, what gets lots of views and high retention etc...

Then it'll pump out a "great" video idea, provide an "outline" (script) and tell you what to do etc... Once you've made the video, you uploaded it to the website, AI then optimise the best search tags, title etc. Kind of defeats the idea of creating original content... my guess is there's a lot of people who use similar technology and it's completely saturating the platform.
