What's new

BBC Core/Pro or Cinematic Studio

You can get the East West Opus orchestra for about $400 right now. Seems to me that would be the best bang for your buck, but then I don't own it and have never used it.
I actually started with EWSO and used it for years. But I just can't handle all the millions of patches in their libraries and Play is not to my liking. I am sure it's good value for the money.

I spent a good couple of years and a lot of money when I started getting into this world buying and trying libraries from all the heavy hitters. I resisted CSS as I didn't initially love its sound. I did however eventually take the plunge. Now having been working professionally for a few years, the basis of my orchestral template is CSS,CSSS,CSW,CSB and True Strike. This is what I use for 80% of my orchestral writing.

I have bought Project Sam's new linage percussion, whilst I haven't spent very much time with it, it seems a pretty good all rounder.

Setting up a template is pretty easy with CSS etc...You can get lots of advice Here, or there are even some premade ones available to buy. It's not hard with a bit of help.

I don't have BBCSO, but I don't love the other spitfire libraries that I have. Mostly not very consistent in terms of dynamics/layers and the intonation on SCS is terrible.

CSS & Project Sams long term support for their libraries is unparalleled. Project Sam are still making free updates to libraries that came out over Ten Years ago. Same with CSS, they are real musicians who really care about their products.

Good Luck

just core because my Mac Mini ram isn't enough for Pro. I have a good balance between VSL and BBC however.
I've been thinking about picking up BBCSO just to use with NPPE and am divided about which to get if I go that direction (I already have SSO and can use that). Alternatively I could go for East-West Hollywood Orchestra. But I've wondered if the additional mics and instruments would be of much use with NPPE.

I will most probably get Cinematic Studio Series later on, really like how it sounds. Only thing that has kept me from buying it is the fact that I already have so many great libraries that it's not about the libraries but the skill that is holding me back. And for the purpose of studying I wanted to get away from all the extra hassle. It doesn't matter if it doesn't sound as realistic as possible, I just want to focus on being a better composer and orchestrator.

why don't you wait until the first class and see what your curriculum is actually going to entail. you may already have everything you will need.
That would have been another option for sure. And I was going to do that but I guess the Spitfire sale just broke my back.

Off topic, but I’ve got your Star Trek mockup thread bookmarked and listen to it quite a bit. I just love it! Love the dry sound also.

Sorry, that was OT! Just recognized your user name :)

Opus doesn't use Play, it has a new player, and I believe it's an updating of the Hollywood Orchestra, not EWSO. This is the new player:

For me CSS is faster (probably because I'm more used to it since it's such a versatile workhorse) and more versatile sonically. As noted, BBC is more "traditional" sounding -- it sounds fantastic but you can't get as intense with it as you can with CSS. BBC has more articulations, but for what you describe I would go for CSS. Once you learn how to work it, it's super fast IME.
