Project colossal - css template - EXPANSION OUT

Just wanted to add to the discussion as I am also super interested in a lighter version of the template. I absolutely understand why Rico chose not to as i'm sure the resulting tone would just be too different to even be called "Project Colossal" but, as a trailer composer whose template is already too big I would love to even get 50% of the "sound" without needing to EQ every mic position.

As a workaround sometimes I will load up CSS Violins 1 for example, go into Pro Q and choose the the Violins 1 Decca preset (as I feel like it's a great starting point to treat the Mix sound of the library). And while sure it doesn't sound as good as treating all the mic positions, it's still *better* than the out-of-the-box sound. I love CSS but the midrange tone is just too sharp/too strong and getting a more airy tone out of it without having to layer another library is like my DREAM.

How does this template behave with soft dynamics passage ?
Not too much hiss and floor noise with the added brightness ?

Is it possible to tweak the template by deleting midi tracks and replacing them with duplicate instruments tracks in order to disable tracks without loosing the routing ?

What cpu are you using @ricoderks ?

Could one use Berlin studio for the reverb as well in this template?
Absolutely. I didn't implement it since it didn't exist back then. But I had very good results testing it.
Specifically with the 2 stereo mid impulses. I used those to replace the room reverb and sounded nice.

It's in the making. I first need to finish my big project that took over a year already....
After that release I'm fully back on Colossal and the lite version. Can't say when and what DAWS yet or if its VEP only. Ill share more once i know more myself.

There is some on lower dynamics but it has been improved drastically with CSS 1.7. Since they announced future updates for CSSS, CSB and CSW, I can only imagine the sound becoming a tiny bit more clean on these lower dynamics. The default sound of Colossal is pretty bright. But Pro Q3 uses a mix feature that you can link. Then you can "crossfade" between the default CSS sound or Colossal sound. Easy!
Of course you can duplicate tracks. Depending on your DAW it should literally copy all settings, including the routing. Keep in mind all inserts will be duplicated too. For that reason I intentionally did not make a multi instrument track version.

Best,

R

One another try with the fabulous PCT expansion 2.0 that I love so much with this mockup of "The Might of Rome" from the film Gladiator by Hans Zimmer.

This time, CSS is layered with Pacific Ensemble Strings (mic AB only) and CSB is layered with TH Brass (mic AMXL Tree) to match the massive orchestration summoned by Mr Zimmer for this OST.

Audio only (better quality than YouTube):

ps @ricoderks : I absolutely love your mockup of "Treasure Planet" made with PCT 1 and the tweaks you made to match with the JNH sound of the original OST... this is where I realize that I should have started from that to make my mockup of "Atlantis, The Lost Empire", listening to it again today, I find it's a little too "distant" ;)

Hey Eric great stuffff! Forgot to reply earlier! Thanks for being so supportive <3

Listening back to the Spaceport mockup there's tons I'd do differently now too... oh well! Next mockup!

Best,

Rico

Would someone be so kind to send to me the five (one per library) Fresh Air settings that are within the Room Channel within the Waves Rack plugin?

I'm going to have to manually enter it because Waves doesn't like this plugin (I've tried vst + au), all the other fresh air plugins are working so it looks like a mac/waves/vst thing

Hey hey!

Please send me a support email via the Project Colossal website and i'm on it asap!

Finally got my new Ryzen 9 system up and running, and Project Colossal (both the original and 2.0) runs flawlessly on it. One of my favorite under-appreciated composers is Bruce Broughton (Silverado, Young Sherlock Holmes), and so I thought I would mock up a theme I have loved since I was a teen from Young Sherlock Holmes ("Watson's Arrival", aka Harry Potter Year Zero, which appears after the main theme in the opening credits).

I used P.C. original on VEPro and wanted to try Rico's Berlin Studio experiment (described in his room impression thread, I used instrument-specific Berlin Studio sends in VEPro on each stem and then a stereo-swapped Berlin Studio send from the Orchestral master bus in Cubase instead of the regular hall and room sends). It's the first orchestral mockup I've posted on vi-control and done by ear so any feedback on improvements welcome!
