Keep-forest FERRUM - thoughts?

I also wonder if there are ready to go rythmic patterns included already in the step sequencer? ( @keepforest )
Yup, over 1000 of them!

The sequencer also allows you to generate new rhythms combining the parts of the existing ones with just one click of a button. You can also just Randomize the sequencer and come up with something new in seconds.

Does anyone have this? Your opinion? Anyone wants to compare it to Damage 2 ?

Just installed Ferrum and played with it a bit. It definitely delivers what it advertises and seems specialized towards heavily processed hybrid/trailer style percussion.

In exploring the WAV folders, Ferrum also has a bunch of trailer FX (braams, risers, downers, etc). I'd be interested to know if these are unique to Ferrum or if they are pulled from their other libraries?

As for Damage 2, that library is aimed towards more general epic percussion and includes more familiar taiko/frame drum/etc style drum sounds, in addition to various other sources.

Damage 2 is also a bigger library clocking in at over 20 GB versus 8.4 GB for Ferrum (~5 GB for the NI instrument/samples, plus another 3.4 GB of WAV files).

TRUE! I just bought it and yes, the usage of the patterns is quite easy - a great browser, quick to load and no complex mouse-menues. I really enjoy it. Most of them are a bit too fast IMHO, but changing tempo to 0.25 will help.

The combination with Damage 2 is quite nice. Ferrum is very metal based and Damage gives the rest. I like the combination.

Tried a few seconds combination of Ferrum, Damage 2, Areia and Talos:

I posted this in the other thread hoping KF would answer and the clock's running out! I was wondering a couple things about Ferrum:

  • Can MIDI from the sequencer be dragged out of Kontakt and onto a midi channel ?
  • If so can you do the same with user rhythms?

  • Other two things I'm wondering is if you can arrow through the rhythms. (In Devastator you have to manually load them with an open/save dialogue.)

  • Last thing I'm wondering is if this comes with a user import patch like Devastator? (The patch should have a similar name...)

Sorry for the questions folks but there's only a couple hours left and would prefer to do my diligence vs impulse buying something...

I can confirm there is an option to export MIDI from the sequencer. I don't know about dragging and dropping, but if I press "get midi", it exports a new MIDI track based on the rhythm in the sequencer.

I haven't really used the sequencer very much though, so I'm not entirely how it is supposed to work. For one, I can't seem to figure out how to assign different key inputs (e.g. notes) to it or if that is possible.

Okay, just figured it out. You can assign individual keys in the sequencer, you just have to pick the "key sequence" option.

However, it looks like the MIDI export does not take into individual assigned notes. It just exports the rhythm (w/ velocity) with every note assigned to F3.

Other two things I'm wondering is if you can arrow through the rhythms.

Yes, you can.

Nice. Thanks!

Hate to be a nudge but can you view and cycle through the patterns in Kontakt?

(Unless I missed something about Devastator, you have to manually load these through a file browser...)

You can use the arrows to quickly cycle through the patterns. It also has its own built-in browser for those (in the instrument).

For example:

Thanks again! I managed to sneak in under the wire. The sequence browser's a huge improvement. Devastator doesn't have a pattern browser, you have to manually load then see if you like pattern... It's not the end of the world, but it is a workflow killer..

Yes, I also would like to see this in Devastator. Currently it is a pain.

I’m probably going to buy this today. Having been using Devastator Full and Damage 2 together in a recent track, I’m definitely up for more Keep Forest. They compliment each other well (if you’re looking for those kinds of sounds). If you’re looking for subtlety, look away!

Only hours remaining at the Intro price. Does everyone who has it still feel very positive about it? Got myself Damage 2. Do I really need Ferrum? Trying to convince myself that Damage 2 will keep me going for now 😀

Im loving Ferrum. I also have D2. Both great libraries

I have both and there isn't a whole lot of overlap between the two of them. Ferrum is definitely the more specialized of the two libraries though, as it is really geared towards those big, loud, punchy trailer hits and lots of metallic precussive sounds.

I think D2 and Ferrum compliment each other nicely.

Yeah definitely. Ferrum offers some hits that are just just so heavy and punchy. Definitely not as organic sounding as D2. I think they work together well as well. I’ve also tried Strikeforce with both of them and that also fits nicely.
