What's new

Why does IK Multimedia generally have a bad reputation?

Dont get me starting on invasive pop ups in Amplitube and Custom shop…

Better tools exist…with better upgrade paths and better support…
This sums it up for me.

Never actually fully deleted ALL software from any vendor until this crap pushed me over the edge.

MUCH better tools exist without any of the hassle factor.

Funny. It's their "marketing" that sucked me in. I got some free version of Amplitude and Tonex. Sounded great for my guitar needs. Then they started sending me a bunch of sales info. I got Mixbox for a steal. Now I'm looking at TRacks 5 but for not much more I can get Total Studio 4 Max! So now that's got my attention.

I guess I'm the sucker then!

They combine astonishingly good products (Tonex!) with an extremely frustrating business model.
This is it, right here. Amplitube is great, Tonex is great, I use the Sunset Sound reverb quite a bit, MixBox is cool, some of the other newer T-Racks stuff is also very usable. They've also got some niche nerdy hidden gems in their lineup like Neil Peart Drums, engineered by Nick Rasculinecz - the Professor, right there in my DAW, recorded by the dude who did the last few Rush albums?! Yes please!

It's the business model that really seems to grind peoples' gears, but if you understand the strategy and wait for the good sales, it's pretty much all good IMO.

It all depends if you want it and if you will use it. My theory on this is, if you are actually using the items you bought, then it was money well spent. I know i have a few that I bought on intro sales and have yet to actually use them in a project. :-( But I use the IK stuff regularly. So I have no regrets.

(UAD has fallen into the same category as IK for me: good products, bad company).
For me UAD is: good products, good company, abominably abysmal product manager software and license enforcement mechanisms. And actually the product manager itself is fine, its just the fact it auto-launches when you open a UAD plugin, even when the license is on a local dongle. But you can
delete the product manager after installing products and it works fine.

It seems the direction the industry is going. I tired Kontakt 7 player and see the store all the time at the bottom. Waves StudioRacks also has it now. An IA search front end for upselling you to other waves bundles.
Cherry Audio seems to have come up with a palatable system in my opinion. You have to go click on the store and/or sales (separate lists) after you already chose to open the product manager. When I did it the first time just to look around, there was actually something on deep sale I wanted so I bought it. For me, it was a pleasant experience since it wasn't pushed in my face while I was working on something else.

How is Tonex different from Amplitube, why would I want it if I own Amplitube? Seems like competing apps to me but apparently Tonex works inside Amplitube.
one is a snapshot of a rig (tonex) with some tweaking possibilities, the other is a rig that you can fully customize and tune

i didn't go for tonex, even if someone says it sounds marvellous once you found your preset...
i am happily using amplitube, perfect for my needs

For me as someone with questionable guitar skills, leaning on other's presets in Tonex was an immediate boost in making me sound legit.

Many years ago, the T-Racks plugins were the staple of my setup, but I eventually became frustrated with IK's refusal to update them. My biggest gripe was the lack of a mix knob on their compressors, and even when they went from TR-4 to TR-5, they still didn't add mix knobs.

Eventually, they pretty much fell into disuse for me (just like Waves plugins). There are simply too many viable, affordable, and hassle-free alternatives available nowadadays.

I got MixBox at some ridiculously cheap discount, and while it's good, it's simply too late for me. I'm already set with all my mixing go-to's that I'll ever need.

And yeah, the installer and in-product merchandising is annoying and unprofessional. I think this is what's fueled most of the disdain that's been hurled in IK's direction.

The whole thing where all the TR5 plugins are installed is crap annoying. I like Mixbox a lot, I got it on sale for $20-30 bux with the Sunset Sound reverb add-on, I also like the tape emulations. But yeah, you shouldn't have to install GBs worth of things you can't use - totally stupid - fix it.
