Spat Setup Tutorial

Hi there,

I'm about to implement Spat into my template, but I'm struggling to find a reliable source that teaches how to set it up with LogicX. I've read all the tutorials and PDFs Flux has available, but I find them poorly documented. I was not able to make their LogicX Template work either.
I've read re-peat put on some useful tutorials, but none of the links I clicked seem to be working.
Smart people, do you have any idea?

I am, but I’m using the original IRCAM ones in Ableton, not the FLUX plugins. I do think you’re right about one thing though, people on VI-C aren’t that into it. But some are, yet they may not all feel they’re fully equipped to provide a full tutorial. For instance, I saw your initial post, actually tried to find Piet’s original videos, didn’t find them and then gave up ;) because I don’t trust my own understanding of the plugin well enough to give someone with your experience a proper and thorough explanation.

TL;DR sometimes a lack of responses does not necessarily reliably indicate a total lack of love for a plugin or a library. I don’t know if a lack of responses is ‘weird’ to be honest.

Well, the lack of enthusiasm may be closely related to the introduction of Spat revolution. It is a $2500 program and it is no longer a plugin. Now, I see they also got an essential version of the program, that may satisfy my needs. But at the time of release I had to decline the "gracious offer" of updating for just under 2 grand (to be fair, I don't really remember the exact amount). That and the fact that it is a standalone application was keeping me from even considering. I would appreciate a version, that allows me to kind of further use the old spat plugin in an updated formate on newer computers that would not be to expensive. But most libraries I use are recorded in real spaces, anyway, so, I cannot justify spending a lot on that, neither could I justify having to use a separate application outside of the DAW.

Makes senses. But recently we’ve seen sales where the essentials version was offered for $199 so the availability “issue” has been somewhat solved, I’d argue.

And for Ableton users, arguably just a tiny fraction of the VI-C audience, the entire thing is free and yes, that version uses the exact same algo’s and offers function parity. ;)

That is why I wrote, I just now saw that there also is an essential version. That was not ever communicated to me, although I have an account and own the older Spat version by Flux. At the same time, I find it not reassuring to hear, that they already offered the essential version for $199, as my upgrade price is now at $358.80. Considering, already paid something like 500€ during some sale for the full version of the old plugin, I am not interested at that price.

Also, the essential version feels like a downgrade. With the plugin, I could open as many instances as I wanted and therefore also have multiple rooms at the same time. This is no longer possible with essential.

I don't use Ableton Live, so, this is not relevant to me. I do however use MAX 8. Is the Ableton version a Max patch?

I totally understand that. FLUX seem to adhere to confusing pricing strategies that do not exactly reward customer loyalty. I was merely trying to say that for the opportunist plugin buyer, there are ways to get their hands on an incrediblly good piece of spatialization software, regardless.

I am happy to be in the M4L “realm” with regard to my SPAT options there I guess hehe.

After so much struggle I could make it work by applying the correct routing which is different than the template they provide.
Their template has audio channels only and I'm trying to route into Spat midi channels content. Is it possible or Spat works with audio channels only?

I got it sorted out, but now I'm getting latency. It's always a pain in the ass when we don't know how to set up software that is poorly documented.

Wish I could help you. I "upgraded" to the Essential version from v3 and never could make it work on my old Mac. It was dropping samples and couldn't provide a full lock. I also don't quite enjoy the approach of leaving the DAW, although I understand why and it makes perfect sense. I do miss v3 on Logic - couldn't find a reliable way of making the VST version work either.

Could I ask you which of the various Spats you are using? From the original message, it sounded like it was the Spat from Flux, but I've never heard about being able to route MIDI into it. How did you manage that?
I'm using the Essential from Flux.
I replicated the same setup from the audio channels with one additional step - you have to restart the return 1 and 2 by turning them off and on again.

I'm still using v3 on a couple old macs running Audiogridder. Basically trying to get dry sounds to somewhat "match" SF libraries with three "mic positions" and it works pretty well.

I'm not really sure how this would work with Spat Rev Essential or Ultimate but it would probably require an adjustment in workflow/general philosphy of combining sounds.

Curious what you guys come up with.

Are you using a silicon Mac by any chance with Spat3 and audiogridder?
I can’t seem to get audiogridder to see Spat.

These are decade-old i7 machines from 2012. Still going. (In fact a pipe in the wall burst and rained on them for a week and they still wont die.knock on wood)

I think these are dirT cheap now. Might be good as a Spat-only machine. Using the lastest version of Audiogridder.

Might you know where Spat V3 can be downloaded?

It was a paid (very expensive) plugin that's no longer available from Flux but there's also a free (is it free?) version from IRCAM that runs in Max/Msp. Actually I'm not 100% sure about that last part and curious as well in case this stops working for some reason.

Thanks
Yes I also bought a very expensive license from Ircam many years ago but I no longer have an install. The “free” ones only seem to be for Mac or Ableton. I’m looking for an AU or VST.
I think you have to use their software installer. You might have to login i can't remember?
