MacBookPro Ventura 13.5 internal spkr buzzing

b_elliott

A work in progress.
My internal speakers started to buzz this week.

I had this macBook since summertime = no issues. Early this week I noticed a buzz from any low end (bass) audio or podcast Youtube playback. I trashed the audio pref files; restarted; updated VLC app; booted safe mode.... no resolution.

So far the only work-around is to engage equalization then sslect FULL TREBLE = almost no rattle. One other oddity, I did a remix of a spoken lecture at -25 LUFS. This plays back without the internal speakers buzzing. Every other audio file causes the internal spkrs to buzz.

So I know it is not hardware related. [M1 chip BTW.]

Apple Care solution: upgrade my MBP to newest Sonoma OS.

My question: anyone on Sonoma? Any Logic Pro X issues since using Sonoma? Any better solution than upgrading OS?

You can try resetting the PRAM or SMC - google for instructions.

Failing that, it sounds like you've got a blown speaker. I had one recently and replaced it with genuine Apple speakers I bought (used) on AliExpress.com

It was a pain and half to replace them, but it is doable.

Good luck!

I have this problem as well with a 14" macbook pro m1 pro. Some on the Apple forums suggest that it is a longstanding software issue that Apple has yet to address. So speaker replacement may not be possible. Come to think of it, I occasionally had it on my macbook pro 2017 as well--at the time with a broken keyboard I thought it was just another thing. With the m1 macbook at first I thought it was just a playback issue but discovered that when recording with the internal mics there was dropout. So... pretty frustrating.

Yes software appears the correct target, since every reboot, including Thundercat's suggested PRAM re-sets = no change -- despite my MBP being 6 month's old (not pre-owned/refurbished per Staples) plus 90% of my listening is on headphones. Ugh, expensive junk.

One solution a friend offered was to go to the city to have the MBP assessed/repaired; however, if the MBP M1 has had this issue for awhile, you may have saved me from an inconvenient trip.

My current workaround is to engage Equalization (shift + Cmd + e); select full treble. Now I get no speaker buzz due to no low end. Oh well.

I appreciate the replies.

ANOTHER Mac question:

Has anyone tried to re-install the original Mac OS (Ventura 13.5 for my MBP) to resolve a security update as the source of speaker buzzing? If so, what occurred?

I'm not sure how the OP is so certain that it's not a hardware issue, but if I were in the same position and my Macbook was still under warranty, I would first do what Applecare suggested, which is to upgrade to Sonoma, just to get that option out of the way and check it off the list. If the issue is fixed, then great. If that doesn't fix the issue, then I'd make an appointment at my nearest Apple store, bring the Macbook into them, explain the issue to one of the "geniuses" and have them solve the problem, which would hopefully mean you walking out with a replacement machine.

I had a microphone issue with an iPad Pro a few years ago, where the audio was all muffled, rendering the mics useless, so I took it into an Apple store, replicated the issue for them and 5-10 minutes later, I was walking out of the store with a replacement iPad Pro.

Yeah I very much doubt this is a software issue.

Macs sound great normally. Buzzing is not a normal thing.

EQ’ing might mitigate the issue or hide it, but my gut says it’s blown speakers, however it may have happened.

But just get it looked at in an Apple Store. They’ll set it straight.

Cool. I hemmed and hawed on this issue; re-contacted Apple Care and am currently doing the Sonoma upgrade as they concur with your line of thought.

So upgrade currently in progress on my MBP.

I did work out another workaround last night for the buzzing issue (left speaker only):
1. Set balance all the way to right sokr - done
2. Set audio in Mono mode. - done.
3. Set Equalization to my preferred listening mode (bump bass+treble scooped mids) - done.

Result = no buzzing. Listenable. Note: This is a cope workaround.

Hopefully Sonoma upgrade just works out the speaker issue....

Thanks for your feedback!
