OBS - Recording Audio Input Apple Mac

Just wondering how folks have things set up for recording audio into OBS. I'm on an Apple Mac with an RME UFXII audio interface and currently use LadioCast with Blackhole that then feeds into OBS. I'm a little dissatisfied as this only provides one single input into OBS, you can only separate and balance the streams in LadioCast. Now although the setup works there's a slight problem. Either my microphone audio is too loud and the synth sound is quiet, or it is the other way around and I cannot seem to get a happy medium.

Before I persevere and keep experimenting, what do you use to record both synth/VST audio and microphone (spoken word) into OBS on a Mac?

Thanks in advance.

RME's Loopback directly to OBS.

Dedicate in Totalmix an ADAT stereo out and name it OBS, turn on loopback, then go to OBS and chose as input the same ADAT Channels

I use Windows so I need to install a plugin called ASIOinput as you can see otherwise it only captures desktop. That's a part I don't know on MAC.

Thanks for taking the time to reply. I will take another look at my settings. From what I have read and understood the Mac uses core audio as the input for OBS. I therefore have to have something in between that takes the loopback to the input of OBS for it to work.

I have trialled Loopback, and that looks to be what you would need. There are other similar products available; in particular I've heard Blackhole cited, which is cheaper.

In my very limited experiments with OBS, I found that the audio was not recored in great quality. This was on my previous computer which was a PC, so I wasn't using Loopback. What I did instead was to have one DAW in which I was playing music. I set up a visual and audio cue (a clap sound, visualised in the DAW with a wave file on the timeline) and used that to sync up the audio which I recorded in a second DAW (used just for recording this audio). I recorded the images with OBS and synced up the audio from the other DAW, then cut out the clap from the beginning of the video/audio combined.

Obviously, there are people using OBS to stream audio live; so it may be that it can broadcast/record audio in acceptable quality when set up right.

Adrian,
Since you have an RME interface then there might be a way you can use TOTAL MIX to create a bus that can serve as the audio for OBS.

I have recently been blessed to have added a Babyface Pro FS and have experimented with creating submixes for my mic and virtual instrument output using Total Mix.

Also, OBS seems to be finicky about which input channel you are using in the AUDIO SETTINGS.
Take a look at this short clip:

The key is using the MIC/AUXILIARY AUDIO option in Global Audo Devices

You can also create an ASIO Audio Input as a source which is another option.

I hope this gives you some ideas ;^)

VB-Audio's VoiceMeeter is commonly used on the PC for OBS. (I realize it doesn't help the OP, who is on the Mac) It's what I use and I know @Simeon uses it too. It's donationware, so people can try it out first to see if it works for them.

Yes, I am still using Voicemeeter, as I wanted to capture the live audio using its onboard recorder. it can record at 48 32 bit float so that is great for editing videos of the livestream afterwards. I think I showed some of this on my last livestream.

I also, did a little test and you can do this in Total MIX as well if you have a free output. it can be anything you could route audio to through Total Mix. The KEY is making sure you have LOOPBACK elected in the output channel strip setting. Here is a rough short demo.

I hope this helps.

Sorry I missed this earlier!

As you can see in my short video, you need to use the MIC/AUXILIARY option in Global audio sources and that will allow OBS to see the input without using the additional ASIO plugin. I had used the ASIO plugin at an earlier time but found I forgot to add it to specific scenes ;^)
RME is such a solid interface ecosystem. I am so impressed with how stable everything is and how low I can get my latency.

I also have my OUTPUT / AUDIO / TRACK ONE setting to output at 320kbps, so that helps improve the audio when you stream a little.

Joyfully,
Simeon

Yeahhh I saw you flexing a Babyface Pro on a video cover. Isn't it awesome? For Windows users it's a dream, never an issue ever. Totalmix was and is a bit confusing at first thoug,
