LaCie 3.1 external SSD

Hi,

I have the orange, LaCie SSD, 3.1/Thunderbolt drive. I’ve noticed that my Kontakt disk warning is hitting 100 percent and clipping out. I’ve tried to batch re-save, format the LaCie to the fastest format for Mac, but still no luck.

I have an Apple laptop, 2.4ghz, 64gig RAM, i9, 500GB space.

I’m afraid my disk being 2.4 turbo, I could use more power in that area. Is there any way around this like finding a faster external drive?

Often the cable is the culprit if the disk speed is not what it should be (You could check the disk with Apple´s Disk Utility or another disc maintenance application). Thunderbolt connections need high quality cables from manufacturers like Apple or OWC and must be certified for high speed data transfer. This is espcecially important the longer the cable is.

Maybe that´s the problem. Thunderbolt 3 and 4 have transfer speeds up to 40 Gbit/s but require active (expensive) cables for lenghts upwards 1.5 feet. USB-C specifications are not so clear. Please have a look at your LaCie device what type of USB C it uses for connection. You could use the free "Blackmagic Disk Speed Test" for an actual measurement of your drive´s speed.

Man you guys are so great! I figured this out... So my two external drives, each 2TB a piece are running at 10GPS. So, the new drive I ordered gives me 40GBPS! I think that will solve my issue. What do you think? It wasn't cheap but it's going to be well worth it. Plus all my libraries will be on 1 Single drive instead of 2 separate drives. I bet that will help some with Disk use in Ableton Live.

Hopefully all will be well . But these things are sometimes hard to nail. I use a Blackmagic muldidock 10g (usb c) and a macpro 7.1 which supports Thunderbolt 3 (40Gbit/s) and USB-C (10 Gbit/s). Never had any read issues. But the dock is connected directly (no hub involved) to the mac and I have invested in very good cables.

Maybe so, now that I think about it? It's mostly in my audio imp Horn library
If so, it could be the dreaded Kontakt loop point bug and not your disk that's the problem. It's been around for ages, but NI say they can't replicate it.

If you're comfortable with the edit view of Kontakt, try switching the relevant groups to sampler mode and see if this fixes it. If it does, it's the loop point bug, please report it to NI.
