What's new

Tokyo Scoring Strings 2.0 Development Progress - New previews on page 3 (late December)

I would love to hear this passage with mod wheel and dynamic layers, it sounds already amazing just this one layer! what black magic is happening under the hood? this sounds like a very realistic agility that a lot of libraries cannot do.
Looking forward to mid December and the possibility of little Timmy not having any presents this Christmas :emoji_laughing:
I might have to try a multi-dynamic version of that clip at some point!

As for what's happening under the hood, it's mostly just consistent sample editing combined with a lot of work put into getting everything matched up consistently so that the samples blend well with each other. It bothers me when I can't get libraries to do a respectable job playing this kind of stuff, so I've been doing a lot to make sure it works here.

It’s just amazing to have devs share and be responsive like this. I preordered TSS and it was one of my best purchases. I can’t wait for this update and everything else in the series.

These demos sound incredible! I can't wait for this update, if I had a time machine, this is what I'd use it for (I think I may have a problem)

Didn't see this thread before... What an amazing news !!!

Can't wait to work with this v2.0 and on top of that, it looks like TSSS will be next, sleepless nights are coming ^^

@Sarah Mancuso

Hi, can I know if there are any delay number for the newest 2.0? Could be that all shorts have the same at least?

Thanks
In lookahead mode, everything has a consistent delay value. 2.0 might also be adding custom lookahead time, so you can set it to something like 300ms instead of a full second (though some of its more advanced features will still require the full second of delay).

Here's a short lyrical clip I put together last night using the pianissimo dynamic only (and lots of layered 8th note RR sequences) with the current TSS 2.0 legato prototype. Modwheel is at 0 for the entire clip, just using CC11 to add some volume movement. (Usual disclaimer about this being a pre-pre-alpha work in progress and subject to change.)

That’s really exciting legato, especially when one remembers that TSS has look-ahead, so no nudging of midi needed to get this buttery smooth, expressive result! Like it a lot.

Another legato speedwrite from this morning:

One from earlier this month:

And a latest-build rerender of one of the original post's demos, now featuring contrabass and smoother 8th note sequences:

I think the next big step at this point will be integrating all this new legato work into the main Tokyo 2.0 engine, so stay tuned for some demos featuring other articulations once that's done.

I'm in the market for my first orchestral libraries (and I'm a software minimalist, so I wont succumb to GAS and will likely only have a handful of libraries throughout my life) and TSS is definitely #1 in terms of what I'm considering for this section size. I'm looking forward to seeing how it evolves as you continue to develop it. Great pre-pre-alpha previews!

Does anyone know what larger symphonic sized string libraries layer well with TSS? I'm really looking hard for the most ideal match. I've been listening to Spitfire SSO Pro (sounds good), VSL (sounds good, but they have several options and who knows which one..), Berlin Symphonic (likely wouldn't go with this...), Spitfire ARO (sounds good, not yet complete), ICONICA Opus (sounds good, leaning most towards this)...

I already have my soloists picked out from a range of different developers.

Tokio Symphonic Strings! 💣
😜

That could be something right, but seriously didn’t exist and was never announced, but I would really like, sure as many here!

So a handful of folks here might already know I’ve been working on a huge update to Tokyo Scoring Strings. It’s a version 2.0 that completely overhauls it with a new engine and a focus on smooth, versatile legato, with the intent being for it to handle basically anything you can throw at it. It’s coming in 2024 and it’s going to be free for everyone who already owns the library.

Here's a quick rundown of some of its legato features, with demo clips from speedwrite-style test sequences I've been using to run it through its paces:

It has round robin legatos,

it’s extremely agile,

it can be lyrical,

it can do runs,

and it’s supremely playable and buttery smooth. (This is me doing some completely random unedited keyboard improv on the cellos.)

These test clips are of a pre-alpha prototype version, and so far only feature violins 1, viola, and cellos, using engineer Mitsunori Aizawa’s pre-baked board mix only. They should give an idea of what you can expect from the update, but note also that I’m still working hard on this and have been making new breakthroughs pretty regularly, so expect further changes and improvements from here.

edit: Whoops, the third clip was accidentally a repeat of the first one. Fixed now!

Is vibrato controllable to non-vib?
