Strings library to complement CSS

Thanks all for your advice. I grabbed LASS and holy moly, layered with CSS it's lovely (especially violins). It really 'opens' the dark sound of CSS and adds that brightness and airiness I was looking for and couldn't quite get satisfyingly from EQ alone - while still being intuitive to use. I wish all libraries could have polyphonic legato and the anti-machine gun mode now!
That’s great to hear! Examples are always good to help the next person on the path!

I remember when I bought LASS(it was on DVD), it was magic and it still is. I have LASS 3 as well but I am mostly using 2.5 with ARC. I don't use any of the colors, I do all the mixing in the DAW and it's really most versatile library I have heard. Sounds excellent alone and shines when you layer it with another library. Adds sense of realism to every library in my opinion. I am just sad that they didn't do woodwinds and brass with the same setup. Would have been an instant buy for sure! Sadly the latest Audiobro libraries don't give me the same feeling. 🥺

Great you found a solution. i don’t own it, but I suspected that LASS would blend well. Next on my own list is CSS, so I’m approaching it from the other way. Adding CSS to Berlin Strings which I’d purchased long ago because the articulations are comprehensive and you can recreate almost any line, but they do sound a bit strident to me. So (and I haven’t had a chance to test these out yet) I bought on Black Friday sale, Vista. That should tame BS down a bit, and I still retain BS‘s multitude of articulations. Also, I added Black Friday sale of Berlin con Sordino Strings. That should further dampen the stridency and add some lushness if mixed and layered well. Personally, I’m really looking forward to Vista 2.

glad you’ve got a solution. It’s a great feeling trusting your libraries to produce what you want.

If I may, I think CSS will be an amazing addition to your toolkit. Especially layered with BS, the results can be stunning!

I really think so, too. I’ve always thought CSS were the best sounding general use library with a lushness that said verity. I invested in Berlin Strings wayyyyy back in the day and mixed them with Hollywood Strings and VSL. And got fairly descent results. But Adding CSS and eventually Vista 2 will bring things to a new level. Of course, this is really overdoing it. I could totally get by on Berlin Strings alone. It’s just that when you want that very, very specific line to work right, you have to use a lot of different libraries in and out of combination.

Ha! I posted this in a different thread. CSS layered with "Staple Strings" from a Hydrasynth Deluxe. Not what the OP was looking for but I do like the combination. Just playing some random chords.

If you don't want to invest in another library just yet but want a bigger sound, you can layer CSS with itself:

1. In the second CSS patches, activate the con sordino option
2. Detune in Kontakt by -2 semitones and +2 semitones in your DAW
3. Lower the second patches by 3dB
4. EQ to remove buildups

This is an example of a track using exactly this and just this:

I seem to remember I saw someone post a piece using CSS with just the SCS outriggers layered in.

Maybe that was worth trying?

I’ll see if I can find the post.

Edit:
Found the post, @inthevoid , it’s Pacific Strings layered with SCS outriggers:

Tested with css too. Sounds absolutely fantastic. Css main mic and scs outriggers. The legato speed slider is the key to make them work.

Interesting! Thanks for the info. I'm tempted to try it myself now :)

I think NoamL experimented with something similar, I believe they were taking one of the mic positions from SSS and using it as "added reverb" to Adventure Brass. Something like that anyway!

I used the legato performance patch. Not the performance legato (not that fancy new patch) Used outriggers. Css mains sound so wide already. In scs set the speed to at least half or less. Also purged the fast legato and swapped the velocity to match to css legato speeds. Works great to add that sparkle.

I did something like this too using CSS.

CSS: close 1 -3dB, main 0dB, room -5dB
SSS: ambient 0db
Berlin Studio reverb: ERs 60%, all mics -6dB

I tested SCS outriggers and Jackson's middle mix yesterday with CS2 (hall reverb off) instead of CSS, and in my opinion CS2 ate CSS alive when paired with SCS. Granted, the legatos aren't as good but the overall sound together was much more open and nice. This being said, it was a rather quick test so take it with a grain of salt.

I did a comparison between CSS and Berlin Strings by doing the same mockup for both libraries. Here were my results. Hope this helps you decide!

Cool, test. I’m not sure which I like better. They’re both good. BS has a bit sharper sound and more presence, but CSS has warmth and a "real" aspect.
