Making Music like Hiroyuki Sawano

Hi everyone
Since I got into scoring, I can't find this style of expressive violins/cellos in any library, with big jumps in pitch like Sawano does.

For example:

00:12 onwards (and 4:24)

00:32 onwards

www.youtube.com/watch?v=MexvJ3rA364

I know he use 8dio mostly for strings, and i know that any solo violin/cello VST can do this with a pitch wheel in MIDI, but it doesn’t sounds like this, I can’t find something that do things like that, maybe cinestring solo?? I would love to know your opinions about.

Yea I could see something like this being pretty tough with a strictly sampled instrument, considering how highly expressive it is, and sounds like some pretty atypical articulations/playing style (at least atypical by Western standards), not that I'm an expert.

The sound you're going for seems similar to what I'd be interested in as well, namely from this (non-Sawano) track:

I've been wondering if a sampled instrument such as Red Room Gypsy Fiddle could approximate this kind of sound:

But yea otherwise agree with @Snow Flake that something like SWAM (which I think is completely physically modeled?) or Sample Modeling (hybrid sample + physical modeling) might be a better way to go for something like this.

P.S. I think what Snow Flake meant was that 1) a physically modeled (or hybrid sample + physical modeling approach) stereotypically gives greater flexibility/control (though arguably at the expense of tone) compared to 2) a purely sampled* instrument. 1) Relies on like, math, to try to sound like a violin, whereas 2) records a real violin.

Happy New Year All!

What is the difference between a traditional one and a physical one? Sorry, I don't know much about this hahaha, but you say that the swam one would work?
Just realized I said traditional modeled instead of just traditional, sorry :)

Traditional is like CSS or Cinestrings, where they record each note and each transition etc done by real players, while Physically modeled instruments, are ones which use math to recreate the sound of an instrument. They are really flexible at the cost of some realism (and require a lot of midi programming to sound realistic).

Sample Modeling can do this. SWAM also but the sound of Sample Modeling is better.
Example with Sample Modeling.
Be prepared for lots of tweaking if you're a perfectionist. (I am not :) )
CC26 for the portamento time. (the slides).

In my Orchestral Tools Strings Only Competition contribution I used this violin as a top layer and solo instrument.

Good luck!

That SM example sounds really nice!

Man, its sound so well, what sample modeling is?

Thank you. I'm not sure what you mean with your question.
But I used the the solo violin from SampleModeling:

ahh I understand, Sample Modeling is a specific program, I thought it was a type of Vst. thank you

Thanks, I'm still just testing it, I have to automate many things so that it starts to sound realistic, but in the end it gives good results, I still have a lot to improve when configuring the sound to get close of that violin tone

Sawano is a Omnisphere lover, he used this vst in Kabaneri of the iron fortress, Attack on Titan, Kill la Kill, JDramas, and others. Basically the beginning of APETITAN is ""(audio 2).

I am working on a mockup of the Apetitan ost, and I am already very well on my way (thank you for the Rad Drug and Power Blowout info), the orchestra is doing well, the choirs too, brass also, once I finish I will upload the final result, but there is something I am missing to complete the mockup, which are 4 sounds that it is difficult for me to replicate...

i separate the stems of the song and i can hear the bass synth or sub bass but i spent about 3 hours looking for a similar patch on omnisphere but I can't find anything similar, and if I try to replicate it, it doesn't sound good, I leave you the sound file I'm looking for below.

And also for the sound effects of the chainsaw, I can't find that sound in omnisphere, neither his classic rise and hit that he uses in all his songs.

Sorry if I ask something stupid, I don't have much knowledge about how to make sounds or anything like that. I am new at this hahaha

Anyway, I would like to know your opinions and how I could get those sounds, it would be of great help to me. regards:2thumbs:

So I am wondering, have any of you tried out 8dio Century Brass? What I've found to be hardest to replicate is his brass, and I feel like CineBrass gets the closest, but I've been interested in seeing how well would Century Brass do

Century Brass is ass(IMO).

Sawano uses a lot of older libraries and has a very Hollywood sound to his brass samples, so the most likely suspects are EW Hollywood Brass and CineBrass.

I see him making a video of how he makes music, he doesn't show his plugins, but I could see in a frame that he uses cinebrass sonore (I saw that he used a patch called twelve horns true legato) and + maybe cinebrass pro, and he mixes it with Majestica's brass, what I did see is that its characteristic sound is something similar to what Hans Zimmer does, he uses about 5 brass tracks at the same time, 2 for each library

Could you share the video please?

Honestly, I checked out CineBrass Sonore, and it looks like the way to go with the 4 horn patch, trumpets, next gen legatos and proper keyswitches

hey guys, I found these images (I still don't know how I did it lol) and it is very, very difficult for me to understand what it says, not only because I don't know Japanese but also because the quality is very bad (there are no other images of better quality than those ), anyway, I wanted to ask you 1) do you understand what this says? even if it's a little part. 2) do you know about any AI that can restore images with text? So I can translate the blurry text and share the information here, because I swear I've been searching and searching and they give me horrible results. regards

Hey, thanks for shearing what you've found. I was actually also looking where those images came from but couldn't find anything because the quality of those I found were just even worse. Yours are literally 4k compared to that.
By (more or less) "analyzing" the big title on the first page, I came across a website called TuneGate (https://tunegate.me/P20180205002) where you can find everything listed on your first image again but this time it's embedded on the website so you can use Google or Deepl to translate it. But you can find the real treasure, if you scroll down a bit, until you come to this part: Bild_2024-01-28_130655461.png
It turns out that this "Sound Designer" is a magazine form february 2018, featuring exclusive content about Hiroyuki Sawano and how he made the AOT tracks. A few clicks later and I've probably found the highest quality copies of those images we've encountered so far:

What about Cinematic Studio Brass? To me it seems to be a lot more flexible and has more dynamic layers than CineBrass
