New piano library - Yamaha CFX from Production Voices

What settings/preset did you use for Noire in this clip?
I started with the basic pure, and I think all I did was enable overtones and stereo image, and set the velocity curve to harder. I definitely only made tweaks on the piano and FX tabs, here are screenshots in case it helps:

I have just denoised the samples of the first microphone and would like to show the difference visually for one sample. I have marked the noise for easier comparison.

I think this is the step I'm doing wrong... bear with me as I didn't know what a spectrogram was until about an hour ago, but I downloaded Sonic Visualizer to compare some of the files.

This is what I'm seeing:
comparison_4.1.1.jpg

Does that look like I did something wrong? I still hear the hiss up top pretty loud and clear.

If anyone could spare a couple of minutes to give me a quick sanity check, I think the denoising step is where I'm going wrong, but I can't figure out what I'm missing. Here's a short (98 second) video on how I got here:

I also get the same thing if I use the Python script to de-noise, just figured it would be easier to show the process manually. I'd appreciate any suggestions, been pulling my hair out over this one!

Edit: I just realized I had linear scaling on the noise profile in the video (and log on the 2 samples), but the screenshot above has been adjusted so they're all consistent.

@Mindbullets You need to save the samples as 24bit instead of 16bit. Unfortunately this cannot be configured in the script, instead Audacity will use the format used for the most recent export. So you just need to export a file (any file) as 24bit, and then run the script.

Thank you so much! This appears to be working much better. I appreciate all of your work on this, @Syntherklaas !

I just finished the hammer and out 2 mics. Sounds phenomenal! @Syntherklaas I am impressed you figured all of that out, and grateful for the assistance.

Here's the noise test again on all my CFX libraries (with the properly denoised 300 Grand this time):

With @Syntherklaas's help, 300 Grand is now my quietest piano library - and it's fabulous.
We are very fortunate to have his skills on this forum.
But you need the full version of Kontakt (which not everyone has) and also fairly advanced IT skills - which can be daunting for a lot of people.
This really should be done by the developer so that everyone who has purchased this lib (on both Mac & PC) can benefit.
As my demo on page 23 shows, there is no loss of "air" or any noticeable compromise to the sound quality on the denoised version - it just sounds really beautiful. I use it every day.
I will never use the non-denoised version again, even though I can still load both.

The irony is that the de-noised samples + my tweaked nki v.2.3.1 makes an official update no longer necessary - all the issues are resolved - but the vast majority of purchasers will not be able to de-noise the samples themselves.

This seems unfair to me.

I do wish the developer would respond.

I would have bought this library but I don’t have the skills or confidence to de-noise 300 Grand myself! As a result, I’m considering Ivory 3.

+1

I would love to de-noise my copy but as a Mac user I lack the program access (and probably the technical knowledge) to do so.

Frankly, this library has only been salvaged through the efforts of a few users who have taken it upon themselves to correct flaws present in the original release, and it would be great if there was some kind of official update or at least a usage acknowledgement so that everyone who’s invested in this library can benefit.

Exactly - and that's a great pity.

Because 300 Grand has a lovely, warm tone (especially at low velocity levels), beautifully resonant (true pedal-down samples), at least 30 velocity layers (across the whole keyboard), very even response from layer to layer, lovely timbral changes as you move from pp to ff, a stereo field that's wide but somehow still intimate, and some of the best re-pedalling scripting I've ever come across.
And it plays like a dream - with no bugs or glitches.

As I’ve reported, I corresponded with Jason and invited him to join the discussion, but he did not. @Simeon also reached out to him, but we’ve not heard anything about that exchange. Barring some miracle on this front, I think I’m done pursuing this piano. Such a shame because it’s really a lovely instrument.

I would have bought the 24bit higher quality version if it had the balance issue fixed and was denoised. Sadly the 24bit version didn’t arrive either! Also, the manual on their website no longer loads. Such a shame!

Noire defaults at -6 in kontakt when you launch it. It needs a bit more "omphhh". I always raise the volume in kontakt to around -0.1. It won't clip don't worry.

Both those tunes were recorded with Noire. It's becoming my go-to piano for my commercial releases.

Did you record these with Noire and then played along on the real piano for the videos?

Yes exactly that. We had Noire blasting/looping through the speakers in the hall as i'm playing along and the camera crew doing their gymnastics. I could have easily booked a studio or even brought my mobile workstation to the hall and recorded that Yamaha piano in the video, but honestly...Noire sounds so full and appropriately intimate for that specific song.

And without getting off topic or spamming the puppies out of this thread, only for comparison's sake, here's that same Yamaha C7 you saw in the video, played live.

Well done, I think the final result is very effective 👍🏻
I agree, Noire is an excellent library! It is my current goto aswell. How did you mix this? Did you do it all within Noire or did you do any external processing?
Whilst I think Noire sounds great, there are a few things I think could be improved. I think 300 Grand has the potential to sound more realistic once the balance issue is fixed and the samples denoised but as it is, it’s a no go. Also Ivory 3 sounds like it has potential and with midi 2.0 being showcased at NAMM it is intriguing to hear what difference having 65,536 makes!?

Yes, Noire is really special. It was one of the first piano VSTs I ever purchased, and at the time I don't think I appreciated just how unique and excellent it is.

Since then I've acquired many, if not most, of the top rated piano VSTs (all VSL synchron series, Vienna Imperial, Ravenscroft, Modern U, 300 Grand, Garritan, Grandeur, Embertone Walker, Hammer & Waves, Galaxy Vinage D, etc.) and Noire still ranks among a small handful of my very favorites.

It might not have all the technicalities of some of the others (no una corda, some pedaling limitations), but nothing else sounds quite like it, and when I just want to play for pure enjoyment and personal expression this is the one usually I go for first.

I have the Embertone and around 12 other libraries plus I tried the VSL libraries. I still choose Noire over those.
How do you find Noire compares to 300 Grand and the Garritan CFX?

Oh yes, it’s also a quiet piano by default, but I meant it has extremely low background noise and undetectable (to me) noise buildup, compared to any of the pianos I showed in that post, especially the stock 300 Grand which has more noise buildup even than Keyscape with no noise reduction enabled.

I do like the denoised 300 Grand very much, and am looking forward to playing with it more once I get a chance to denoise the remaining mics. It’s a bummer the library seems to have been abandoned, the samples have so much potential.

I do find the VSL CFX more responsive than anything I’ve been able to get out of the 300 Grand or Noire so far, staccatos seem more alive on the VSL in particular, but I need to spend some more time with it and I’m sure it’ll be a useful library. The sound quality (denoised) is phenomenal, and it really is a wonderful library if you have the time and resources to denoise it.
