What's new

I'm building Wavekit an audio hosting service

I too prefer the non-branded experience, but an opt-in sounds good. As you know, I coded a wrapper to be able to lazy load the player when it comes into view in the browser (for pages with many players).
BTW I added an option in the embed modal so that the iframe is lazy loaded.

This works on all modern browsers.

Since you're a techie you can probably add the iframe attribute yourself but just wanted to let you know in case you missed it :)

Oh great. I'd be interested to know how it works! Might need it at some point as super.so looks like a great option for a quick portfolio website.
I will write some docs tomorrow but basically you use the command /embed and then paste a special URL from Wavekit.

This creates a widget with a Wavekit player.

This is great to create a Soundcloud substitute and I really like your idea... If I understand correctly you will be offering audio file hosting as well as the audio player.

Best,

Maximvs

Yes, that's the idea. I plan on adding more features later but right now it's focused on hosting the audio and providing a good player.

If you'd like to try it out, contact me via a private message and I'll give you access to a trial!

I have a work-in-progress marketing site here with more information:

Is it going to function for posting examples elsewhere, i.e. here on VI-Control?

The auto embedding here on VI-C already works 👇

Just paste any Wavekit share URL and it will be converted magically into a player.

This will work in all the forums that use the Media embeds plugin for the Xen Foro platform (which VI-C uses).

Later on I will submit Wavekit to Embedly which is used in tons of sites and apps.

I contacted some big forums like KVR and GS but they ignored me. I will try again once I have the new marketing site. Maybe they will take me more seriously :)

It works on Twitter too but AFAIK only in the web app (nothing I can do about this).

In places where the player cannot be displayed, a preview card will most likely be displayed. This is in the Whatsapp app for example:

Have you already considered using old school iframe code snippets for those scenarios?
Oh yeah this is the default way of embedding the player.

My comment above was about automatic embedding. Pasting a Wavekit URL somewhere (like in a forum post or a tweet) and then the iframe with the player is created automatically after submitting.

Did I understand that correctly, that you’re also planning to sell the player for people who are self hosting their media files?
Did I mention this? 🤔

I remember you're using WP from a previous conversation.

For self hosting aren't there already tons of paid and free solutions for WP? WooCommerce has an audio player included (albeit kinda ugly). Also Sonaar. These guys have one for Elementor. Etc.

Yes, they all suck and are all more expensive than base Wavekit, as literally everything in WP is a yearly subscription now. Wavekit is cheaper and better and I hope it stays that way forever :)

So after much deliberation...

I've decided to increase the Portfolio plan from 5 hours to 10 hours.

Same price, same everything.

The motivation for this change were a number of comments which made me realize 5 hours felt a bit tight for certain users. And OTOH I don't want to push people to the 100 hours plan if they don't really need abundant storage or cannot justify to spend 100 Euros per year on the service.

Tomorrow I will update the links to a new version of the WIP marketing site to reflect this change.

A feature request I’d love to see, but don’t know how niche this may be or if others are interested, is the ability for tracks to have an A/B toggle.

I’ve never found a great way through my website or music players that I’ve tried, that gives viewers the ability to toggle between two mixes for a track. I’d love it mainly to show a mix/master before/after. I’ve seen company websites do this a lot to see an effect of a plugin and whatnot, but having it more easily accessible for my own website would be killer and definitely make me interested in your project!

I've definitely considered something like this. It's an ubiquitous UI idiom of websites selling plugin effects. I hadn't considered it for mixing and mastering pros though.

It would be a super cool feature but right now I'm focusing on high-priority critical stuff.

I do have a couple of ideas on how to implement this AB player though. If I ever get to it, would it be ok to contact you privately to get some feedback?

Absolutely, feel free! I understand the priority list so no worries. But if you every get to experimentation I’d love to be a guinea pig!
