What's new

Staffpad Feature Suggestion thread

Two things:
Clef changes mid-measure, and

"Reminder" accidentals, where they are strictly speaking not necessary, but help the reader, as in an F sharp below the bass staff followed by an F sharp above the bass staff later in the measure. I'd like to be able to place a sharp once again next to the second F in the measure.
Also, it is not quite what you are describing, but there is something of the sort built-in for other occasions, like this I encountered today

...where the sharp note in the last bar does not have to be exlicitly marked up as such, because it is a new bar, right? But that sharp was added in by Staffpad automatically, when I dragged a note between the lines...

The info about mid bar clef changes is from the 2020 update blog entry. Maybe the help section is deprecated.

Edit: hey @Pseudonym did it work for you?

New desires:

Being able to have different meters and keys within the same space of a score
Saw that in scores by Debussy and it actually helps to structure impressionist idioms in the score

One new line in the automation pop-up menu for each switched on effect
You know how you can switch the automation lane to expression/volume/pan? I like working with it a lot. As all of the FX are one-knob-only, it would be great if that menu list was populated by any of the switched on FX (so it grows or shrinks dynamically). Imagine being able to draw in automation for the FX...

Render to new audio staff
Importing is easy, but I am lazy

Add filter to standard default FX for any staff

The mid-measure clef changes seem to work now, but with the following limitation:
I have to put all the notes in for the entire measure first and then go back and change the clef.

If I place, say, two quarter notes in a 4/4 treble clef measure and then indicate a change to bass clef after the quarter notes, it appears after the first quarter instead. If I want to place the change of clef at a specific point in the measure, I have to fill in the notes of the entire measure first, then expand the measure as much as possible by dragging the right bar line further to the right. In this way I have a better chance of placing the clef change where I want it.

I didn't have to do all this and in that state it is hardly usable, I'd say

I am compiling a list of observations which I think are bugs and will probably send them in one by one when I sorted out how to reliably reproduce them over the course of the next weeks. If the beta didn't go well, might as well try to get the things right that annoy me most. Maybe send your observations, too, they seem to be highly appreciative of input

To go on with the clef topic:

Redundant clefs would also be on the top of my list.
I usually work on piano scores and spent a lot of time restating clefs that have been overwritten by a change in in an earlier section of the score.

And definitely the option of having traversing melodies would be great for the readability of the piano staff!

I'd love to see the ability to move through a large score more easily, such as being able to place Markers and then have a simple 'go back' or 'go forward' to next marker.

Not just rehearsal numbers, because that could take a long time to go back in the score.

But to have a separate 'Marker function' that you could navigate to very quickly.

(has this been requested before?)

Once you get a score longer than 5 minutes in length, it's not very easy to 'flip back and forth' through the score in order to check previous ideas.

You can use up to nine Rehersal Marks to navigate your score. They work with an external keyboard, to go to the first mark press 1, second press 2, etc. Not a perfect solution but it works.

1. Have the Undo option available all the time (it always seems to be on the other top menu bar for me). Or have a quick way of undoing with the pencil (triple tap?). Or make the double tap as an option to undo, an alternative to the option for selection.
2. Allow pitch selection for instruments (so I can write for a Horn in Eb using the F Horn instrument, for example), and have the transposing view show up correctly. This applies to lots more brass instruments.
3. Just improvements on recognition of the handwritten notation detection. I'm getting more accurate, but sometimes you think 'Why did it not recognise that'.
4. Full Brass instrument library (for brass/ military band).

The new Muse brass library seems quite extensive - what kind of instruments are missing there? I didn't see a susaphone, but it was a long list of other instruments which were not included in other paid libraries

For brass band we're missing an Eb Cornet (Trumpet), Eb [Tenor] Horn, Baritone (although euphonium ok as an alternative), Eb and Bb Basses (Tubas).

The amazing thing is that Fenby can’t navigate to them.

so when I first got StaffPad I could three finger swipe back and forwards to undo redo... not just in StaffPad but in pretty much any app... which I did all the time.

these days... it doesn't seem to work as well as it used to.. it still works... but it also zooms or moves stuff. however its kinda broken in all the other apps too so I think it might just be a general iPad bug...

I have sent such a long list of crashes, irritations, baffling observations and mysterious nuisances to the Staffpad team hoping they can help me with those (and in my experience they are quick and comprehensive with replies, it's just that I haven't had any solutions to my problems I encountered, so far) that I thought today, we should probably compile a neatly sorted list of bugs ourselves in addition to this feature suggesttion thread.

I really wonder if the Beta just went haywire or if my problems are some weird rare case of misaligned system specs or something, because there is so much going on on a level that I thought should be handled before publishing a major upgrade.

Just today I realised the one-knob-mastering button introduced crackles and pops on an audio file I imported which had at least 10db headroom (and on a quiet part of it to boot). I've had staffs which could not be toggled to adaptive audio on and the tempo staff was fixed on tempo mapping mode. Neither would budge. Muse Strings make snapping noises on a certain kind of tremolo. Scoring Synth bass staff can't be automated in volume without crackles. As I said, it is a long list and I just wonder if I am out of luck or if this is stuff that many people struggle with...

On the bright side, after the latest hotfixes, I could for the first time see my piano capture (on an imported audio file) in action, revealing notation of what I played.

All in all: The promise of Staffpad as a general purpose composition and production platform becomes stronger with each update, but the debris of unresolved bugs and fragmented or non-existing documentation resembles the impenetrable cloud of shattered trash that orbits the earth right now. No idea how this can be cleaned up. The task gets more and more herculean with each ambitious round of unheard of innovations. Boggles the mind, actually

Ahh! Please!

Cup and Straight Mutes for Trumpets and Trombones in the Muse instruments! (or in stock sounds!)

That would make thousands of people very happy.

As some have mentioned -

-Markers or similar for easier jumping around
-show/hide staves, or focus on staves like Sibelius.
-i dont think anyone’s mentioned it but I’d love some sketching staves, 2 staves of String Section, 2 of Wwinds and 2 Brass.
-list of articulations
-more workflow videos
-(edit) mixer, and much easier way to solo/mute
