What's new

11th International Film Scoring Competition 2023 (as part of the Zurich Film Festival)

The will honour it, but it will take time. This year's edition terms and conditions included:

After the announcement of the nominees, the participants who are not nominated are allowed to use the film together with their scores for their portfolio or homepage.
And in the Q&A section:

May I publish the competition film with my music in the internet?
YES! The directors have granted the permission to all participants to use the competition film together with their scores for their portfolio or homepage. The film must be duly credited as the directors’ work, and the event “11th International Film Music Competition” must be mentioned.

But you have to wait until you know whether you are nominated or not. If you are nominated, you may only publish your work after the world premiere on 30 September 2023.

I asked the organizers if I should try to dispute the copyright claim and they told me to NOT do it.
I am waiting for the end of this absurd story
Unfortunately for me, that ship has already sailed!
Not sure what to do next - keep it as it is and wait it out, or delete it and resubmit it once this has been resolved.
Have also been considering putting a notice on the video informing viewers that the reason they cannot see it is because of a dispute between the directors (copyright holders), the competition organisers and a media distribution company.

Here's my entry into this year's scoring competition. Thus far, I have not come across any problems with copyright. I guess that issue got resolved...?

Anyway, I loved this film and enjoyed working on it. The hardest part was getting the written score ready. I was, and still am, new to Dorico, so it was slow going.

That's really lovely, Charlotte. Great work, well done!
Regarding the copyright issues, to my my knowledge it's not been resolved yet. They usually hit you a week or two after the upload... but some seem to have managed to get through. Hope yours is one of those!

Arg! As I was uploading the video, YT supposedly did a copyright check and gave me the ok... but I suppose that might not necessarily mean anything. I'll let you all know if I get a strike. :(.

Anyway, thanks for the kind words.

It looks like you got the strike at the end and the issue still remains.

The final is only a couple of weeks away, so I wonder what the contest organisers are thinking here.

This is odd, happened to stumble on this thread as I wanted to listen to the submissions as I'm intrested in entering in the next competition they do (I'm not in this one). But why exactly is everyone getting strikes?

As far as I heard from the contest organizers, they are working with the filmmakers to obtain the rights for distribution and publication for the purpose of this contest. I am sure it will be solved but it’s taken much longer than anybody thought it would take.

Dang it. Thanks for the heads up. I'm sure the organizers are well aware of the situation, but I may write to them anyway to see if I can get more info.

Update: two days ago I got a response from the festival saying that "there will be a solution in a couple of days," and that they would contact me. I haven't seen any change yet. Strangely, the linked video that I posted here on this thread still seems to play, at least for me.

I wrote to the organisers yesterday and received this reply...

thanks for your message and sorry for the inconvenience! We are aware of the problem, and Zurich Film Festival and the producers of the film are working on a solution. I'll inform you as soon as the problem is resolved.
For the time being, you may put the film with your music on your personal homepage.

The only trouble with that is that it is complete nonsense. They don't own the copyright so they can't assign a license - that's why there's a problem in the first place. I would speculate that someone didn't do their due diligence and obtain all the necessary copyright permissions first.
And all this rubbish about "you may put the film with your music on your personal homepage" is, in my personal opinion, at best a waste of time if the file is being hosted on YouTube because it will swiftly get blocked, or you run the risk of getting a "cease and desist" letter from "nikitaventures" lawyers if the file is hosted remotely. IMO, it's a non-starter.
As for the claim that they are "working on a solution", I remain highly sceptical. It's been nearly 4 months and no agreement has been reached. I would speculate that this enigmatic "solution" involves money. Given that there were only 153 participants this year whose entry fees will not even cover the prize pool, I'm not confident of an equitable resolution to the issue anytime soon, if ever. But I'm happy to be proven wrong. Perhaps if box office receipts are good they may be able to come up with the funds to secure licenses for 153 entrants... but I won't hold my breath waiting for that! ;)

As of right now, I am of the opinion that the organizers are in breach of contract, as it was clearly stated in the terms that we would be able to publish the video. I am still hopeful though that once the final performance happens tomorrow, things may change.

I agree entirely. In my email to them I also noted this...

Because the organisers have breached the terms of the competition, will they now be issuing refunds of the entry fees to all participants? I believe there are laws against false/misleading advertising in Switzerland. Is this true? If so, who do I contact?
A bit cheeky, I know, but I've literally lost money over this after YouTube started "shadow banning" my channel - I'm down by nearly 80% because of the competition organiser's negligence. The copyright issues should have been resolved long before the competition was even posted. And if an agreement could't be reached, then just say so in the Regulations so that at least prospective participants know exactly where they stand. I'm not very happy about that...😠
Of course, the organisers didn't address these questions in their reply (I wonder why) so I sent it again! Still waiting to hear back about that... suspect it will be a very, very long wait...

I just pinged the organisers again, and once more same answer.

Their response:

unfortunately it's still going on... Zurich Film Festival is still busy sorting this out.

For the time being, you can put the film with your music on your personal homepage.

Sadly it seems the organisers did not do their homework upfront, so I have very little hopes now this will be sorted. I have since posted my Dorico score on my YouTube channel with a tiny video player overlay, which is better than nothing, but not what I hoped for.

I just published something similar: Studio One playback video + upper right portion showing the original clip. let's see if this will go through.

no :emoji_unamused:
it took just a few hours before being blocked.
I am wondering what's the algorithm's logic...
