What's new

Full version of "This is Berk"! (monthly How to Train Your Dragon mockups)

May's mockup is up, a couple of days late because I had some technical difficulties. I hope you enjoy and please let me know your thoughts! :)

I added the first ~45 seconds of the piece and reworked the brass from April's mockup, swapping CineBrass with Tom Holkenborg's Brass.

This is still a work in progress, but here's an excerpt from June's mockup (continuing my work on "This is Berk"):

Going into this section of the piece I was worried that I wouldn't be able to pull off the choir parts, but I'm actually very happy with how they turned out - this may even be my favourite part of the mockup so far! :)
Let me know your thoughts (and be gentle with me ;))!

June's mockup is up and I must say I'm pretty pleased with it :)
The mix is a bit different to the original (and arguably less clear but not generally worse imo) but I'm very happy with the performance of almost all instruments, especially the brass and choir. Please let me know your thoughts!

Also feel free to hit me with suggestions what piece I should tackle next month as I haven't decided yet :)

Unfortunately I don't speak spanish but I tried my luck with google translate :)

Gracias por sus amables palabras; Me alegra que te guste.

I apologize, I had translated my comment from Spanish to English, but I don't know what happened in the copy and paste process on the page and I didn't realize that it was in Spanish. (I also use Google to translate, hahahaha) the important thing is that the message has been understood, I will follow your music, a hug.

Only three months and boom, here's the full version of "Romantic Flight"! :)

Let me know your thoughts! Next month will likely either be one minute from "Coming Back Around" or a decent chunk of "Forbidden Friendship". If I do "Forbidden Friendship" it will feature a Glass Marimba from the Abbey Road Tuned Percussion library I expect Spitfire to release in the coming weeks :)

Nice work! Sounds good to me :)

Here's my mockup of the first ~2 minutes from "Forbidden Friendship" - please let me know your thoughts!

To be quite honest I'm not super happy with how this one turned out (but I'm uploading it anyway because there are less than three hours of August left). I think it can stand reasonably well on its own, but as a near-identical reproduction of the original there are simply too many differences that stand out when comparing the two versions side by side. The only thing I'm really happy with here are the strings from 1:28 onwards.
With all of that said, I still got a copyright claim from YouTube for the full mockup, so it can't be that bad if the Yt algorithm "recognized" it as the original :)
I'll likely revisit this mockup in the future and upload a longer and improved version. I also plan to use this as a demo for Spitfire's Abbey Road Tuned Percussion library that I'm sure we'll see quite soon.

I'm not an expert by any means, but is a very good job in my opinion. You're right about the 1:28 strings, if you're going to go back to this Mockup I'm sure you'll polish up the little differences. (I compare your version side by side with the original).

I like it! The timpani or whatever drum that is playing throughout gets repetitive though and the sound itself of it seems a bit misplaced, however I can’t remember how the original sounds on that point.
Thank you for your feedback! I agree on the drum sound (I assume you don't like the Dhol which is the most present perc instrument in this mix) - the percussion was actually the section I struggled with the most. I'll likely revisit this mockup and expand it in the future (because the ending of the piece is really cool!), so maybe there will be an improved version in ~two months :)

The rest sounds really good, you can absolutely be happy with this!

August: It's impossible to make a post that links more than 6 videos, so for August's mockup (Forbidden Friendship) I'll have to redirect you to this post :)

September's mockup ("Coming Back Around") is linked in this post.

As part of my new year's resolution for 2023 (which you can check out here if you're interested) I'm doing one How to Train Your Dragon mockup per month. By doing this I hope to learn from John Powell's briliant writing and to improve my mixing skills along the way.
I hope you enjoy and I'm keen to hear your thoughts!

great job and quality mix best wishes Phil
