Obviously “ZebraHZ” and “Diva”. But Synapse “Legend” absolutely has the sound down pat - and does a MiniMoog with a proper ADSR. And then there is the virtual “Knifonium”. I love the hardware one, but this emulation is pretty amazing.

kevin comparing it with my hardware MiniMoog...

Does the newer emulation from Softube (Model 72) stand a chance against "The Legend"?

Favs for me (not most used) are GForce OB-X for "just sounds great", Cherry PS-20 for "you got to be kidding me" and Cherry CA2600 "more fun than a barrel of monkeys". I'd have the same opinions with the Arturia equivalents. FWIW, criteria for me is not so much stuff that sounds *exactly* like the original hardware, but rather stuff that sounds good on its own merits. The GForce OB-X however sounds a lot like the hardware imo.

Honorable mention for FM8, ancient as it may be. It paired with the Arturia "REFRACT" freebie (not sure if it still is free) can make some really great sounds.

I have both and Model 72 is a more accurate emulation (better than UAD's also) and includes individual modules that can be used within ST Modular. Unlike Model 72, The Legend is polyphonic. However, Synapse Audio will soon be releasing The Legend HZ in collaboration with Hans, which promises to maximize the Mini! As Pier mentioned above, Arturia's revised Mini is a major improvement over their previous version.

Wow, a Hans Zimmer version of "Legend"? That sounds interesting! But apart from the lack of polyphony, Softube might also need significantly more processing power?
Yes, I know the Arturia version, but overall I don't think Arturia is particularly good at emulations (IMO!)

Arturia's latest efforts are quite good actually.
Model 72 is nowhere near the CPU hog that is Moog Mariana.

I can well imagine that, but he new Moog it's not a Minimoog but a bass synthesizer? But Legend vs Softube Model 72, Softube is probably more of a CPU hog.

The Legend HZ is a basically The Legend but with Zebra features, it’s very good and turns The Legend from being just a great Moog emulation into a real workhorse synth that can do a ton of stuff. I’d say it’s now more of a younger brother to ZebraHZ than just a Moog plugin

Got something against the newer PM synths, Pier? ;)
I’ll second Plasmonic (which is brilliant) and also cite the Physical Audio synths (Modus, Preparation, Derailer) which are amazing if you want to bow metal sculpture ITB.

I saw it, Kevin Schröder posted the picture and Richard will probably open the beta test soon... That is of course very interesting.

I just started my journey into soft synths quite recently, and I chose UAD PolyMAX for the simplicity and great sound. Also have been fiddling with Cherry Audio's SEM.

Which synth would be a next logical step up after I learn all the ins-and-outs of PolyMAX?

There really isn’t a definitive, universal logical next step.

But the questions you can ask yourself in order to make this determination would include:

What’s your personal level of mastery of synthesis concepts at this point? And what level of mastery is your goal?

Are you looking to “roll your own” sounds, or do you plan to rely more on presets?

What kinds of sounds do you find appealing or want to use in your music?

Do you have a personal affinity for any vintage or modern hardware synths that would drive you toward specific emulations?

How powerful is your current computer?

Something like Arturia’s Pigments would vastly expand your synthesis potential, and still offer a non-skeumorphic non-emulated UI with plenty of modulation options and user-friendliness.

Try demos of classic synth brands and see if one speaks to you: Korg, Roland, Sequential, Moog, etc.

For example
- Repro
- Axxess
- Model 84
- The Legend

And after that I’d explore Twin3, Diva, Pigments, etc that are more complex.

Then try FM synthesis and modular.

There’s a lot of synths listed in the poll that I simply don’t like using and/or hearing (including many popular ones) vs ones that speak to me. You have to put in the time and effort to discover that for yourself.
