The weird yet fascinating world of Soniclabs' math driven synthesis and sound design (Oceanic discussion)

Really quick & dirty noodle I made, just to send samples of it to StarWaves to create a stochastic grain pad (starts at the 1:20 time mark).

I also just received an email from Sinan / Soniclab with this chunk of info:

“Also there is an additional discount for the owners of any sonicLAB Bot plugin. They can purchase the bundle for 69 Euros. ( please send an e-mail of your request to support. )”

nice examples!!

EDIT: also from Starwaves 2, that eluded me, somehow, also a great thing.. will get it, when i am ready!

but about: Oceanic;

question, in one of the vids the developer uses Ableton Live, which i have; 11 Suite..
to map the CC from the plugin to parameters, with a M4L device, he seems to use more than this device;

but it is doable in Live, also in Bitwig Studio (5)?

or Reaper?

but mainly can it be done in Cubase 11 Pro? (without loopmidi etc..)?

I don't know Reaper or Cubase, so no help there. It was very simple to set up in Bitwig. I added Wavebot to a instrument track. Then added WaveCC. Then added an effect. In the effect I added a modulator, and selected Midi from the list of modulators. I went into the settings for the Midi modulator and set the CC value to 30. Then I mapped the modulator as usual. It worked just fine. I didn't need any other plugin like in Live.

I tried adding another WaveCC to a completely track, an audio track with an effect. It didn't work as I expected, so I may be doing something wrong. I am just getting the hang of this plugin. But as a controller modulating an effect after Wavebot, it worked just fine.

Found a work around. Kind of back to the old Live stuff. I needed to set up an audio track with an effect, and then add a Midi modulator set to CC30, like before. But now create a separate instrument track and add the WaveCC, then route the output of that track to your audio track and remember to record enable the audio track so that it gets the input.

and i have bought it, only played with the presets, and 2 Wavebot instances... outstanding, with more Wavebot instances, of 2.. and WaveCC the bandwidth of sounds you can achieve will be greater as expected i think.

so, a heat wave will interfere with the waves, but this will be an adventure (and worked finally with Fundamental 3 today, which when tamed...., can also produce very interesting sounds).

@krankyone i think i will use it in Bitwig mainly, i consider it a lineair DAW, which it isn't per se of course, well Cubase or Reaper are for me the best, but Bitwig will perform well with the modulators, generative all of over the place.

will be a great adventure, i am quite overwhelmed. (and as reverb i will use inspirata of course, although, bitwig... and reverbs; i don't want instant ambient, like Rings + Clouds)...

I just got it and have been mixing 2 instances of Wavebot with Dawesome's Novum. Makes me feel like I'm La Monte Young and Brian Eno combined without the technique and genius. Sublime sounds, thanks Doc. Loving it.
It just so happens I’m working with it at the moment as well! This for sure is an interesting beast. For the first 15 minutes I’ve basically just sat behind my screen, mesmerized by the lovely wave animations… Now I’m using a combo of various Cosmosf M31 and WaveBots to create a generative Aaron Venture woodwind quartet, playing at the Amsterdam Concertgebouw (Inspirata). Fun!

I’m happy to hear you’ve got it as well and are loving it.

Woah, your one wacky dude. In the best way possible. 🙏 Yeah it's interesting how the Oceanic app operates as a stand alone and communicates with Wavebot in the DAW. I too was hypnotized by the ocean waves on the GUI. It's like all my knowledge of Fourier analysis (I'm a math dude too) was coming to life. So much fun to work with and quick results. It was a lot easier to figure out then some of the synths I have. Very intuitive. And if anybody else is reading this and is into generative music, this is like Disneyland.

I love math dudes. Wish I was one hehe.

It's probably why we love Xenakis, not that you have to be a math person to admire his stuff. I had a piano teacher who was so conservative about her music tastes but loved Kaija Saariaho and Ianis Xenakis. She got me to explore a lot of 20th century music and opened my mind to the possibilities of music.

Are there any good YouTube videos to give a good impression of what is possible?

Yeah, in the previous posts, Doc posts a few. I'm no synth expert but it takes a different approach to wave synthesis using modeled ocean waves. You can drive VSTs and hardware synths. And it's pretty simple to get started. It's not a traditional synth where you get immediate diatonic tones but more ambient experimental, generative.
