What's new

Engine (Best Service) problems.

I just got my first Tarilonte library and was shocked at how outdated the player looks and feels.
I just had a little play for now, but the download/installation process wasn't the greatest either compared to other companies.
Hopefully the sound will be enough to compensate for the user experience.

ERA series sounds fantastic. You can't believe how many soundtracks include them in a way or other. But it's all after learning how to use it properly, which is a steep slope.

Anyways, here's the changelog for the latest ENGINE:

Engine 2.8.0.58 (December 28th 2021)
- added new features for upcoming products
- general improvements and stability fixes
- support for new operating systems

I made the huge mistake of buying the Dark Era library from Best Service. I have seen horrible GUIs in my lifetime, but none came remotely close to the Best Service "Engine". It's an attack on good taste. A full on attack with Apache helicopters launching nuclear missiles, the giant robots from Pacific Rim punching good taste to a pulp.

Not only the font is hideous (it's like they grabbed the Cubase GUI font and beat the living hell out of it), but the GUI is not scalable, so you can't see anything!

And those colors in the keyboard? Useless, because they don't match anything in the instrument. Logically you would think that the only keys that are active are the ones in color, not the white ones. That's universal across all virtual instruments. Here, it doesn't matter, it's just for show.

And to top it all, it doesn't have a VST 3 plugin, or any plugin that works with Apple Silicon. I can only see their "Engine" (a stupid name if there's one) if I launch Cubase in Rosetta 2 mode.

Who are these people? Do they go back in time to 1989 to build the GUI in a Commodore 128 and then bring it back and do the rest of the programming in the present? Because I know there are different GUIs in VSTi engines and some are better than others, but even the worst parts of Kontakt are not as bad as this. This is a train wreck. I see design flaws in GUIs all the time, even on software by huge corporations. But I have never seen something so lazy and useless as this.

I deleted everything this monstrosity installed and told them I want a refund. If they don't give it to me, I'm going to file a claim with my credit card. I won't pay for something I can't even use because they are so lazy they can't even write the code for a VST3 plugin that works with Apple Silicon.

I never look at that interface. I can see no reason to edit there. You need to look at the one made for Era. Read the info there for each instrument. There you can read what the various keys do. The ERA instruments are amazing. You should spend more time with them.

I don't follow. The manual says that this library depends on the Best Service Engine to run. What's ERA?

It runs on Engine but what I mean is that you can operate the library from the custom UI that comes with the library. The various tabs provide all the information and tools I need. I have never found a need to tweak the sounds beyond that and actually open up the Engine interface.

The instrument has a custom GUI, but you need to do some things in the engine. I started using computers in the mid 90's, and I don't remember an interface that looked worse than this one, on either Mac or Windows. Absolutely useless. And that's useless as in I can't see the text, even with a 32" 4K monitor, and I can't use it in Cubase because the Engine is ancient technology that doesn't even have a decent VST 2 plugin.

I hate it to, but it's a lot lot better when you just use the "Quick Edit" tab, The instrument pages of Edouardo Tarilonte Librarys are actualy quite beautiful. I never venture elsewhere in that Engine thing, I have good eyes but the infamous typography make them bleed :D.
I pray everyday (well, I'm joking but still...) for a new program running Talironte's gems, it's so sad those little wonders are stuck in that engine of another time...

(In fact I had hope that something like "The Score" would encompass those librarys, it would have been great...)

and….i probably will not purchase any other of the Engine based libraries until they update as they do NOT run well on my current system!

Both problems are caused by your hardware and DAW.
Hahahahahah absolutely hilarious. Worst VST engine ever, not by my judgment but by at least hundreds of people on lots of forums (just Google Best Service Engine sucks and you'll see what I mean), and to you my problem is my hardware and my DAW. Yeah, my Mac Studio Ultra, my Samsung 4K monitor and Cubase Pro 12 are absolutely at blame for the trainwreck that is Best Service Engine.

really poor VST gui, apart from that I love the libraries, which is such a shame because this problem will be affecting their sales measurably and Eduardo is top class and deserves recognition. They should have stuck with Kontakt.
I don't find I need to edit under the hood as plenty of features on the main gui.

whilst I find they all work, I have a problem with NADA which keeps asking for licence so I don't use it.

I wonder... Does anyone here have tried the Engine librarys with Unify ? I hesitate to buy it. If it works well in it, it could be a solution ? Or maybe I misenderstood what it does... Personnaly I' m looking for something that could blend togethers all my intruments wherever they come from. I want to play an Era lyra with an obscur kontakt free oktobass library, with a soundpaint piano and a Sine choir ! :D
And have the oppotunity to classify them all (like in kontakt quickload, but with everything in it)...

Update : I took Unify on the sales (very impressive, and I just scratched the surface). It takes Engine, Sine, Kontakt, Synchron Player, Spitfire player, etc. It eats nearly everything :D.

So you can play Engine together with all the other libraries from other samplers, and make great ensembles, and it works much better than what we can do in DAW. It does not remove the horrible Engine from the equation, you still have to open it to choose your instruments, but now they can play with other friends, and you can add all the effects of unify on it.
