What's new

XLN Life

They are saying that anything you create using their software they can upload and use it in anyway they see fit including machine learning models to improve their product. But, it doesn't stop there. They can then alter it in anyway they see fit, and then others can download it and use it as well. You keep the right to use your original work in your own compositions and that's where your rights end.

It's totally f'@#D and one would be a fool to use this product, imo.
I think you are talking a out the previous version of the T&C, because in the revised version the license is explicitly limited to the purposes of getting the cloud based services working

I installed the demo thinking about trying it these days and buying it, since I like the idea of recording and sampling + slicing immediately, and the XO-style workflow and interface seems comfortable to me, but given the updated license, I am not paying for this application a single penny.

This afternoon I will uninstall the demo.

It is very ugly, and very disrespectful, to use the work of your own clients as if they were the company's own resources and data.

If they want to train their AI with my data, they will have to pay for it. I am not going to pay to use an application and *AT THE SAME TIME* grant my data (my work) so that they can do machine learning.

No-Go Zone.

This has a very bad smell to it. I think I have just wasted my money. Unless you read the legalistic fine print, there seems to be minimal, if any transparency. I can't see myself using this software not knowing what they are doing to my work in the background.

Teachers and students pay $$$ to buy text books for their training, which pays the creators. Meanwhile, computer companies feel free to swipe that very same data - our data - or in this case to actually charge the creator to train their machines. Go figure.

This is a disturbing development. As a professional musician, I sometimes work on other people's music. I don't have the right to passively let someone else's intellectual property train and improve XLN Audio's machine learning models. Even in cases in which I own all of the rights, I don't want my music to train software that may attempt to replace me in the marketplace.

If this license wording applies to the new “Life” product only, then I’ll simply avoid buying it; but if they’re applying it to all of their products, then I have some uninstalling to do!

Best,

Geoff

Aside from licensing, does anyone know if all data is kept on their servers, and a connection required to use the application? I understand the concept of connecting to a mobile app to transfer data from phone to computer, but what about long term storage? this would be more concerning to me than the licensing issue, though that is also a bit worrying. I mean what happens when XLN decides they aren't getting enough revenue from the plugin to maintain the content server?

I like the concept of the plugin. Seems like a spin-off concept of the now obsolete Loopmash that used to come with Cubase. Quite useful if the details can be ironed out (and the price come down to half what it is now).
