Acoustic sources

Idea for a potential library - "tonal noise".
There is a ton of tonal noise/air coming from all sorts of places. I especially like fans and vacuum cleaners.
Here is a very interesting example.
Playing a single note + chords with a fan I recorded in a public parking garage.
Nothing to great but shows the idea. I think those are potentially amazing sources for organic pads and textures, especially when recorded from a distance or in interesting spaces.

really nice Lionel!
the fan is almost 'grey noise' but some interesting harmonics...
were the chords built from the fan? or overlayed with another instrument/synth patch?
they have a lovely fuzz to them, that meshes with the fan

I'll be giving you a free copy of the library if/when I make it!
(I've made a note with your name attached)

wowy, many thanks! :D

It's just the fan. Just put it into Kontakt and set the sample start to a nice section.
I'm currently trying Zynaptiq's plugins so I threw unveil (to make it slightly more ambient) and Unfilter on it (but to "filter" it - give it more resonance). And a small EQ boost in the tonal area.

beautiful sounds!

according to wikipedia:
Gamelan gender Wayang - Tuning
Like other Balinese gamelan, gender wayang are only approximately standardized in relative pitch, though instruments of each group are precisely tuned with masterful pitch pairing and register stretching. Absolute pitch varies according to the bronzesmith's preference. As a result, individual instruments are rarely exchangeable with those from any group other than its original. One instrument in the each pitch register, pengisup (sucker), are tuned a hair higher than their mates, pengumbang (waver); due to our logarithmically scaled sense of hearing, the lowest notes need to be paired further apart in absolute pitches than the highest to achieve the same, ideal rate of “shimmer” at unison. Further, octave intervals are stretched to be slightly more than double the hertz to achieve a similar “shimmer” at octaves.

Gender wayang are in slendro pentatonic tuning, approximately C D E G A on the Western scale.

Impulse responses? ;)
Location is Durie Hill in Whanganui NZ which has this 213 metre long tunnel, with a vertical escalator/lift at the end, which takes you up to a panoramic viewpoint…
On first visit yesterday, performing handclaps was unreal as there is actually a flat wall at the end of the tunnel - the elevator entrance is around a corner… So a clap excites the verb in the tunnel, then a huge slap echo bounces back and excites the tunnel verb again!
Depending where you stand when you make a sound, you can vary the time until the slap delay occurs & it got quite ‘zingy’ sounding & almost sounded like a ricochet at times…

This morning I went & got some balloons - I had my starter pistol in the car, but this is a public place… and I wasn’t keen for a Police armed offenders callout… Will see if I can deconvolve it into an IR…

Note to self: in future always have a pack of balloons in my recorder bag. The SPL and impulse from a ballon pop in such a confined space was VERY effective! There are some similar WW2 tunnels in Wellington & of course the LOTR sound crew recorded sweeps in there… It's on my ‘to do’ list and will be able to access power so can take a speaker & record sweeps... But will also take props in there eg I have a pipe band marching bass drum & imagine the verby booms!!

And here is what Durie Hill tunnel verb sounds like...

I'll revisit it (& a much more complex set of tunnels, closer to home) to record sweeps for a HISSandaROAR IR Library....
