MacPro 5,1 Relic: what to do with it.....

i'm curious what Alex would have to say about this firmware patcher. Anyway myself..I will not do it.

I don't like Dayo's chaining approach either as far as his applescript tool and what not, but I've had mine setup with his version of reFind (actually a fairly old version of it) for quite a while its works totally fine, except in the end i realized I don't even really need that either. The only reason for it is if somehow I want to dual boot with Windows legacy (without OC) and OC..then maybe a boot screen be useful to choose whether to boot what OC or not. OC has actually come a long way since things so that using Windows through OC is more foolproof now then it once was.

I also put my OC stuff on a USB stick actually. So any time I want to boot without it, I can pull the stick and my machine will boot mavericks from the first drive without OC.

OC itself has a boot screen for choosing what different things you would like to boot as long as you are setup to always boot through OC and don't need to ever boot with it.

You really don't need a boot screen at this point... and in my view it's not worth trusting someone on the internet that says they have patched the firmware for me just for that. Glad to hear its working for you, but if someone here tried it and it somehow bricked their mac...it won't be on me...

Still in the game....

Nice! Love to see these guys keep on going...

After a looong installation time (on and off due to workload) I am finally at the stage where I'm rebuilding my few templates and testing the system for stability; Monterey/LPX10.7.9, so far pretty good. A couple of unexplained lockups and crashes, but mostly all good.

I'm not having any lockups and crashes. If you are its not related to the 5,1, its software related.

I think so, yes.

First Logic spinning wheel may have been due to some Kontakt Multiscript hang-up I was playing around with.

The system lock-up (I'm usually able to connect via network to troubleshoot, but not in this case) was a kernel panic due to a process called "watchdog" which timed out waiting for a successful checkin from the window server. Hasn't happened again yet, so I'm not pursuing researching it at the moment.

If you had a kernel panic it’s hardware related
Well, that wouldn't be very good. Though I had some temporary stuff connected that could have been the culprit - perhaps the shared USB bus on my CalDigit Card (I know it can be an issue), a few external HD to copy stuff over, and a BT dongle that I should probably remove, as I don't seem to be able to tell Monterey to use it, as I could with Mojave.

And... I jinxed it. The kernel panic just happened again. Now I definitely need to investigate it. Hope you fare better Dewdman!

kernel panic could be any number of things, I haven't ever had kernel panic with this Mac....but this could be bad memory, or bad device, etc.. if you're using open core it might even be the way you have open core configured, hard to say.

good luck.

Thanks, appreciate the good wishes. No clues so far, but I’ll start yanking h/w out and take a look at OPL configuration (Though OPL has been running very well for over a month on and off, just started two days ago).

Could be time to reapply thermal paste. Happened to me on 2009 4,1 northbridge heatsink

Had not considered that. I suppose it’s possible. No way to know before taking the heatsinks and caps off and no way around it once I do, so it’s full commitment... Thanks, will keep it in mind if I can’t find any other culprit.

Check temperatures with Macs Fan Control. Northbridge Heatsink should be in ~40C and Northbridge Diode around ~55C
