What's new

Cubase 13 released! Now available for purchase

I like many of the new features and changes to the UI. Might actually give it a try again, as I started using Studio One instead of Cubase a few months ago.

But man, having no changes to the expression maps in term of negative delay for individual articulations is a bummer. After that was implemented for Dorico I really had my hopes up that they will add this feature in Cubase as well.

So it's still down to use thousands of tracks that are getting absoluetly cluttered or nudge the MIDI notes themselves.

Still can't wrap my head around why this doesn't get more attention by both, DAW and library developers...

Incredibly well worded, and I’m in complete agreement. The more we voice our concerns, the higher the chance that they will listen and make changes.

I moved over to Cubase from Studio One because of orchestral composition where I wanted to see if I could take advantage of Cubase's powerful midi functionality. There are certainly things I like but a lot that feels very archaic and convoluted. They were probably innovative when first introduced but have since been done better by others. At least that's my impression.

That said, I've also decided to give Dorico a go and I have to say I'm loving it. I didn't really have any experience with notation but the ease and brilliance of doing things in Dorico make everything easier for me. It's one of the most impressive music applications I've ever used. In conjunction with Note Performer it just flows and I'm no longer fiddling with sample library articulations, velocity, CC data etc - at least not while composing.

To maybe help wrap your head, my guess is their budget since they are a business.

Steinberg knows their users and the many different user groups. There is considerable customer research behind public scenes...far more than just public forums and an occasional public feature poll. While general thought might be that EM users mostly use Ableton and composers mostly use Cubase, neither will simply adhere to a single user group. My guess is there are far more casual EM users on Cubase than there are commercial composers for film etc.

Beating a dead elephant, but a "simple fix" such as just an on/off switch or even GUI adjustment is not necessarily simple in the Cubase environment. This goes for also fixing known and verified bugs. My guess is Expression maps is high on the agenda, but due to other related and/or upcoming features and taking resources into account, it was held back. It's not just money, but the timing too. Unlike Reaper, it's a business with accountabiltiy to Yamaha.

For new features, I would guess it's a bang-for-the-buck decision. Keep in mind new sales is what counts. I wish there were more attention given to long term Cubase users by fixing issues and incomplete features, but I think they have to keep a balance while keeping an eye on the competition.

At the moment, there is nothing more obvious about how to win than what UAD has done over the past year. Ignore loyal users who have invested thousands over the past 25 years. Instead, seduce newbies for a $99 bundle that just a few years ago would cost thousands. And after the bundle sale, hit them hard on a daily baisis to push them to Ultimate. It's hard sales, and it works. Waves has been doing it for years.

Remember regarding DAWs, prosumers are in the drivers seat...not professionals. The prosumer, just "scored" a 999 Gig library of NI samples at Christtmas, and feels the world is their oyster for a Billboard hit in 2024. The prosumer also "scored" that $99 "UAD glitch" bundle sale that includes Manley Massive Passive and might feel like JJP.* But the prosumer has no clue about when to use what other than copying what is said in advertisments, tutorails, (many dones for clicks) and public forums. The prosumer whines in forums, then clogs up support that used to be professional phone support, resulting in UAD switching to a "ticket" system that now takes weeks.

Professionals know their tools, and create work-arounds to meet deadlines. I'm confident improved Expressioin maps is on the horizon, but patience is necessary.

After spending a bunch of time recently in Logic (and some in Studio One to check out recent updates and even doing a mix in Pro Tools 2023.12), I composed and produced a track and mixed it in Cubase 13 - and it was such a pleasure. Cubase is so powerful, the MIDI remote functionality coupled with Metagrid, my Monogram CC, and Faderport v2 is incredible, Control Room makes using Slate VSX and switching back and forth to my monitors really easy, the new channel UI on the left is what I've wanted for years for quick access to inserts and sends, the large template management is second to none, and the MIDI editor is still by far my absolute favorite of any DAW. And most of all, stable and good CPU efficiency on my M2 Max.

Yes, I'd love some improvements to expression maps - at least being able to select the articulations in the UI easily before recording. But easy to put up with given all the other features.

[...and the MIDI editor is still by far my absolute favorite of any DAW.]
I have to say the multi-part editor seems really interesting to me, as the one in Studio One feels a bit clunky.

For example in S1, you can't resize the "track list" in the editor and so often my abbreviations are not fully shown and I have to click on them individually to see the full name or guess which is which. That ofc is not a big deal and after working long enough with a template it becomes familiar enough I don't need to see the full track name.

Or when selecting several instruments to edit them, it only edits the first track you edited something in and stills writes only in this one, even after highlighting one of the other selected instruments for multi-part editing. For example, when selecting horns, writing in a note, than highlighting/selecting trumpets to add a note there, it goes back to the horns and adds the note there. Even when all are activated for editing.

Seeing the project view with the timeline while also editing it in mutli part is a huge feature for me and potentially a massive timesaver.

After working with expression maps in Cubase and the sound variations in S1, the setup of those is in my opinion not better in one or another (when not using the pre-made ones for VSL and so on in S1), but actually using them in a single CC lane in S1 is without a better solution then the Cubase one.

I'm more hopeful so see the "negative delay per articulation feature" first in Cubase as oppossed to Studio One, as they have already figured it out with one of their other products.

A deeper integration with Dorico would be also huge and I also have more faith here in Steinberg, as PreSonus Notion feels like Abandonware at this point.

So maybe I'm also going in circles - back to Cubase for now..

I much prefer the editor in Cubase than S1. Controller lane presets, global tracks you can actually modify like the chord track, active part editing, much faster CC transformation handles, and note-specific articulations - which is better than the “direction” style that S1 uses (Logic also uses note specific articulations).

I have kind of given up on my Avid Artist, it keeps getting disconnected during the write of automation. But I also have a Faderport 8, would you mind asking some Q I have regarding banking the faders?
Sure - there’s a custom script on the Steinberg forums that I use which completely transformed my FaderPort in Cubase. Follows track selection, lets me control all sorts of things like zoom, works great. I have an Avid Artist Mix but found I preferred the little FaderPort more because it is easier to do things like automation modes, dropping and navigating markers, transport control, etc.

Had a rough start with Cubase 13.

- Installed it, didn't find my Komplete Kontrol, had to reinstall whole Cubase + all the drivers for the Komplete Kontrol to get it going (it played notes when I used the transport controls).

- Also a huge amount of visual glitches turning every element white.

Found the workaround on Steinbergs website for those. But honestly, this should be fixed at this point after the initial release.

When activating outputs in the rack for some reason It's changed (since the .20 update?) Can't seem to multi-select outputs and turn them on / off anymore. It's either "Activate all" or you click one-by-one...

Click and drag! 🙂

I did it in the new channel inspector thing here, but the rack should work the same.

You can't multi-select them individually anymore it seems, which is a little annoying, but most of the time you probably want to activate/deactivate a bunch in sequence anyway.

It's the simple things in life that make me smile (when you know they're there, of course).
 :2thumbs:

Here’s me trying to use alt, shift etc… f*** sake 😂

I do prefer the old way though, you could click one then hold shift and click another to select everything in between. It worked just like track selection shortcuts.

Cubase 13. I keep trying to like it, but it keeps fighting me. It was an unusual act of congress just to get sound. But the worst part is that it crashes. Constantly. 2019 MacBook Pro with 64 Gigs.

Yeah, sort of agree. Click-and-drag is cool and all, but I don't see why they couldn't let us have both.
Alas, such is life in software land, I guess. A new version arrives and it's two steps forward, one step back, three steps diagonally and then a pirouette and a giant leap in some completely random direction.

Overall though, I must say I'm really enjoying v13. The new visibility features in the key editor are very useful and well-implemented. Very happy with this update!

You should check out the latest interview with Steinberg's Managing Director. Steinberg/Yamaha are working on some projects together. One thing mentioned by Clyde was the balance between the latest trends, and long time Cubase users. I think they are doing as best they can to balance everything.

Ya I'm using that on my ioStation 24c and it's totally awesome.
