How do you mix orchestral scores in quad?

I use JBL rear and quested for my main. It works for me, for sure. In an ideal world, all would be the same but I would do the JBL in the rears for you.
Thanks, so this is an affordable solution. I'll probably try this. Which exact Jbl model do you use?

It’s not necessarily a piano is “behind you”. You are immersed in the sound, properly recorded. Not a splash of reverb put in the rears or panned behind… you need to record the surround mics and put them up back there… or don’t pan them back there at all.
Exactly. But my point was sound produced by the rear speakers need not match the more direct front sound perfectly to get a lovely immersive result.

If you were going for the “I’m sitting in the middle of the band” effect, having precisely matched speakers might be more important 😊

This thread got me interested, so I hooked up a pair of old speakers and setup a quad output in Cubase using Cinematic Rooms Pro. It might not be accurate since the rear monitors are different than the front, but the sense of space is amazing, and most importantly it made me notice the reverb (too much!).

So I got curious how this would sound with the actual mics routed, and I tried with Synchron Player, in quad, and the experience while writing is truly amazing. For mixing I'll go back to stereo, and maybe one day Atmos with Spatial Audio, but for composing this is inspiring.

However, I have tried with the Vienna Ensemble Pro Surround VST3 plugin routing to the quad out, but I can't get the channel config dropdown shown in the manual.

The instance self-reports as being "Stereo" and when it tries to connect to the server it reports

I have tried routing the plugin in Cubase to a 5.1 output, but it still reports as being stereo. Any ideas what might be going wrong or how to show that "Channel Config" dropdown?

In case you're trying to connect to a pre-existing stereo instance of VE Pro Server, you might have to convert its Channel Configuration first (Main Menu > Instance > Convert Project Channel Configuration ...). A new Instance will use the format chosen in its initial Configuration. Please get in contact with VSL's support if you encounter any issues.

You can configure them all as stereo. Just pan your stereo mics you want to the back. Thats how I do it and is a pretty standard way. So one or your mic returns will be to the front then the microphone positions you want In the rear will be panned to the back.

Yup, same here.

Thank you, that’s probably then what I will end up doing since most plugins only have stereo versions. I was hoping to try the downmix from 5.1 to quad, as the Synchron Player has a surround VST3 variant with all mics correctly panned out. Inserting the Player plugin directly in Cubase gets a 5.1 channel, as expected, whereas the VEP surround plugin returns stereo only (this is before even trying to connect to the server). This is particularly odd since the AU version of VEP Surround in Logic works as expected and returns 5.1. In any case as Kontakt/SINE are stereo, I will likely simply use two stereo returns panned front and back.

I’ve tried the surround version before and it was more headache than proper panning

HTH,
For anybody who may be interested in this, VSL just released an update to VEPro that fixes this bug, and now it's possible to see the channel config again.
