Developers, what do you do with the samples that don't make the cut?

I always record more takes of everything than I need, so I have more to choose from when assembling a library. Recently I was cutting guitar samples and after I'd finished I realized I had enough samples in the discard pile to make another complete instrument.

These samples are not what I would consider good enough to put in my finished product, but they are perfectly serviceable and some people might even enjoy the imperfections. I'd like to put these into the world for people to use, but a) I don't want to undermine my own products and b) I don't want users to misinterpret these as a representation of the quality of the samples in my products.

What do other developers do with the discards, just leave them in the trash?

Hi David,

Hmm off the top of my head my sense is that when a library is a freebie there's less complaining about the imperfections. So that could be a solution.

Another option is including it as a bonus package with the purchase of a product.

Just a few thoughts.

Note: I am not dev though just a composer

Yeah, a 'raw' or 'test-material' freebie/bonus patch could work. Other devs have done something along these lines already, such as Musical Sampling's Solo Legato Trumpet, or Performance Samples' Chamber Violins Classical Shorts.

I don't think this would harm your reputation if the nature and purpose of these samples is clearly disclosed. Hope that helps!

Create a product line of loosely grouped samples called something like “Imperfect Samples” that describes exactly what they are. Charge a fair price (never free as many don’t truly appreciate free) and enjoy the income stream.
