What would you get or recommend?

My win98 1.7 mhz PC with 1 gig of ram running GS 2.5 + sonar2 with a SB Live Platinum isn't cutting it anymore. I'm tired of continously exporting out .wav by wav section by section.

Would you recommend any particular systems or website links with the Ulimate "DAW" ?

I'm wanting to possibly get 2-3 'PC' machines. (just cause i don't want to join the bandwagon of mac or rebuy all new software). Two boxes to house the samples and 1 to run the programs.

Hardware: Studio Monitors, receiver, Keyboard Controller, soundcard..

purpose and style of music: HOLLYWEIRD loudness! big bang trailer, with a twist of intimate lush strings.

Price: 9-15k

any feedback would be superb! Why not ask you guys who are the industry's elite? :)

Hi, a couple of general tips;

AMD chips are generally faster and cheaper than Pentiums but run hotter and louder.

Put your fastest CPU in your host machine. Save money on the slaves by putting in slightly slower CPU's but with more ram in them. Slaves daws dont really have to think that much but needs lots of memory. :)

If you're going to network them (for FX Teleport), buy a Gigabit switch, gigabit lan cards and CAT 6 (not Cat 5 or 5E) cable to connect them.

You can buy a KVM switch or do what I do, use Windows remote desktop to connect to your slaves. Real VNC is another remote desktop prog. Its freeware but not quite as smooth.

Another thing I did; put a decent cooling system/silent power supply in your host DAW and leave it in the same room that you're in. Throw your slave daw's in a cupboard or another room and run the network cable out to them. Dont worry about silent kits for them as you wont need them.

VIA chipsets are totally ok with audio now. They use to be troublesome some years ago and some people still think they're unreliable. This is no longer the case.

Thats all I can think of right now.

Hey Justin, check it out:

It's no secret that I'm a big VisionDAW supporter. What's cool is that these are turnkey systems that are burned in and designed with the specs that work. The other cool thing is the support - its number one.

You may not be a big Mac fan, but the Mac G5 and two VisionDAWs would get allow you to do virtually anything you want (because the Mac G5 can run the sequencer, a host of native plug ins and a whole suite of samples while sending midi to the PCs with power to spare - as always just my opinion.)

good gracious that scoring stage is amazing! Perhaps if I got one of these Daw Daw DAw machines I'll have my name and poster credits added to that page!!

Perhaps I'll have to look into one of these bad boys. Rack Mount? Maybe I'll just shove it under my desk and throw some ice cubes on top to keep it cool.

But... its great that it does good with the samples.. but I also forgot to add.... Can these systems handle video input as well along with Gigastudio and the occasional game when I'm bored? (i'm not going to be working all the time ya know :)) DV, DVD, vhs, PAL, mini.. should I get two separate systems. So many questions.

I'm a mac guy so you already know what I'm gonna say - if you're doing video and graphics Mac does really well, especially in OS X. The Lucas ranch is filled with Macs, and the video mixdown for Lord of the Rings was done on Macs I believe.

Occasional game? 64-bit apps are coming. The Mac G5s are incredibly fast in drawing graphics so fast and furious gaming is a great deal.

Ok Ok - I'm ALSO a VisionDAW guy so for Audio Apps, I really think the VisionDAW does extremely well. They come with 2 internal SATA drive slots - you could essentially have one app drive and 2 10k rpm raptor drives to run EWQLSO Platinum or your favorite 24bit libs.

aaahhhh... My personal quote relates 100% to this statement:

"If you know how to use a pencil to draw, you could probably draw anything. Now apply that to everything in life." -Edgen

:)

Ya, I'm pretty sure they are all the same just with different buttons and different names. Perhaps I should just get off my high horsey and mingle with the real stars :)

but damnit. I made friends with the PC already. Perhaps I'll have them working side by side in one harmonic and parallel world one day.

What about Monitors? Or a Low budget Keyboard controller? Any thoughts on that?
