Cubase with local VEPro Server - playing back late

If I open a Kontakt 7 instance within Cubase and record an instrument that I know is tight to the grid (and quantise it to the grid) then playback is right on the click by ear, and when bounced/rendered to an audio track I can see that it’s right on the grid.

But if I open the same Kontakt instrument in VEPro and play back the same way then I’d expect the Cubase/the plug-in to ‘look ahead’ and play it back in the right spot. For the most part, it’s doing this, but in some instances of Kontakt in VEP with more instruments loaded (only up to 16 per instance), the playback is late, after the click, and when bounced in place I can see it’s after the click!

So I did some tests with a Kontakt instrument that has an electronic snare that has been cut right at the head of the sample, so playback is dead on the grid:

1. A Kontakt 7 loaded into Cubase - bang on the grid in playback and when bounced to an audio track.

2. In VEPro a K7 plugin with 16 instruments loaded - plays back and bounces 24ms after the beat

3. In VEPro - same K7 plugin but deleted all but the instrument I’m testing, so only one loaded - plays back bang on the grid.

Other behaviours… if I save the problematic K7 multi and open in a new plugin - same latent playback and bounce.

So at first glance it seems that if I have a Kontakt loaded with 16 instruments then the playback is behind the grid, and if just one loaded then everything seems to be dead on.

There seems to be nothing in between - the I tried a few different Kontakt sounds and the are delayed by 24ms - the gap behind the grid showing in the bounced audio. It either happens or it doesn't.

I’ve ben working with Cubase and VEPro for years and years and have never noticed this before - does anyone know what might be going on??! Help!!

I'm on a Mac Studio with Cubase 13.0.20 and the latest VEPro 7 Server (Native) on the same computer. I have the VEP Server project decoupled and VEPro VST3 plugins in Cubase.

Below is a screenshot of some of the tests when exporting the audio to track

I recently rebuilt my preferences when I upgraded to Cubase 13. Did I miss something perhaps?

I thought the plugin delay compensation was 'under the hood' in Cubase?
