How are you finding recording musicians in specific countries?

I'm looking for a musician who plays traditional asian instruments (east asian specifically) with the the requirement that they will be from New Zealand (due to some funding requirements). I don't know where and how to even start looking. Tips and links would be appreciated.

Youtube works quite well. There's a lot people that record themselves and You may find them on Youtube. I've found few great musicians this way.

Weird that in this day and age there isn't a website dedicated for finding remote musicians.

There are a few, soundbetter.com being the best that I'm aware of (and I've gotten a lot of work through them), but I don't think they have the capability of searching by country of musician. You can usually see where everyone is located, but it would be laborious to find someone who fits these criteria on that platform... plus, I don't think they have a category for, say, "Southeast Asian Folk Instruments" in general. You'd probably be looking through a list of guitar players' doubles hoping to find the right instrument and the right nationality.

Some well-defined Google searches are probably the way forward, here! Listing some specific instruments would be helpful, too. There are thousands of distinct cultures and traditions in East Asia.

I asked a friend who has recorded with remote musicians and he found them on Fiver.

Fiverr and Soundbetter are my go-to resources.

But never thought about YT, indeed that's a great resource too.
