How does this trumpet/percussion mix sound?

Didn't seem to be a correct forum for this but people here have great ears and it doesn't contain any samples so this is probably the best place for it.

I'm going round in circles with this mix of a trumpet solo backed by percussion and a didgeridoo drone - I'm not sure if there's something I can do to the mix to make it pop and sparkle more, or whether it's the edit (probably fixable) or the arrangement (not as fixable) that I'm not happy with.

The didge is also the last thing I added so not really EQed or smoothed out yet.

Could you have a listen and see what you think?

Cheers,

Very interesting piece. A few suggestions which might create more pop.

The doubled trumpet certainly gives a width to the sound, but given that they're not locked together, the effect might be kind of weakening the focus of that melodic line. Maybe bring one line forward in the mix and push the other one back? And perhaps panned more centered?

The trumpets, to my ears, are prominent- very forward in the mix. The percussion seems somewhat relegated to the background. And there is a lot of it; some parts competing with other parts for attention. Maybe less is more in this case? Choose only the percussion that is distinct and not competing with other percussion. Or bring certain parts forward in the mix, with volume and/or center panning.

Hope something above is helpful, or gives you some more ideas to try.

Lowering the volume of the trumpet would already be a good thing even if it upsets the trumpeter's ego a little...

Thanks, yeah it is a bit 'kitchen sink' at the moment, I've maybe lost sight of what the point of focus should be as the solo goes on. I'd thought that panning things to the side would mean there was enough space for everything but it obviously doesn't work like that. Interesting that you both thought the trumpet was too prominent, I've probably listened to it too many times to pick up on that now.

Thanks, gives me a way forward. :)
