Low Budget suggestion

Hi guys , a friend of mine which is a graphic designer is making a short film and she needs to get a small setup for recording voice-overs on a low budget ( PC user ).

Could you please give me a couple of low/medium budget suggestions to pass over to her ? Quality : Good , but not perfect .

I told her to get an Soundblaster Live! 5.1 and a Shure SM58 mic for about 140$ all together , but i don't know if you need a mic pre-amp to connect it through the line-in . Behringer also a thought.

so.....

Low budget : Around 150 - 200 $ all
Medium budget : Around 200-300 $ all

Thanks !

Theo, a Shure 58 is actually a good suggestion as it is a speech mic and puts up with a lot of explosive blasts of air. They are used a lot in courtrooms and for public speaking.

Since it is only speech, route straight through a sound card. The mic is dynamic anyway and wont need phantom power.

You will need a pre-amp. This mic is mic level not line level. A simple Beringer mixer for $39 or an Art Preamp will be needed between the mic and the soundcard.
Cheers,
J

I'd suggest the same thing. I think it might cause impedance problems as well. Btw, if you're in Europe you can get a great deal on Behringer products at: http://www.musicstorekoeln.de (www.musicstorekoeln.de)
The SM58 is a good choice though. Personally I use 58's for small venues as a live engineer. They've survived lots of scary situations :D

You're probably right about the impedance thing, sorry Im never able to remember all that stuff. :) I know my sound card supports +4, consumer or -10dbv and I can plug a 58 straight into it if need be.

Scott, no worries man -> I forget stuff all the time as well. ( Too much music in our heads has taken over everything else :P )

Thanks for the info guys , i'll pass it on later !
