Mix Translation : The Midrange Magic

BUMP
this is an awesome video.

I'm so accustomed to only cutting, this blew my mind.

Surely I'm not the only one here who's improved their mixes by boosting midrange frequencies? Seems like everyone cuts mids and only boosts highs and lows.

Not that the dude is right, as mids do make the mix. But what he's basically doing in the video is just boosting the overall volume with those mids and tricking his own and our ears to think that louder is better. This quick carving he does also introduces a lot of harshness into the upper mids, so he's definitely making it look much more simpler than it actually is.

Since everything happens in 64 float, it only matters if the otherwise proportional EQ solutions are arrived at via primarily cut or boost is if the EQ plugin is "colored" i.e. incorporates saturation or some other mechanism to change tonality of boost vs cut. But for a clean EQ, assuming output level is held constant, it doesn't make any difference.
