Delay recommendations: Thoughts on Melda's MDelayMB, EchoBoy or others?

Hello everyone.

I need to upgrade my delay game a little bit for something I'm working on. I had a look at Soundtoys' famous EchoBoy but I prefer a more affordable option at the moment. I saw Melda's MDelayMB for 24 euros and looks like a great effect (I love Melda's stuff) but wanted to know what other delays you know and love. I'm looking for something which sort of can move in a more spatial way rather than just stereo ping-poinging.

Thanks!

I'm not as picky about delays as reverbs, but I'm completely satisfied with Valhalla Delay.

I purchased UVI Relayer a little while ago for more adventurous excursions, but haven't needed it on anything yet so havent really dug into it.

I just downloaded the trial to test out and will probably buy! Love that new Rich Pitch update!

What do you need a delay to do, that your current set up can’t? That’s really question number one.
Good question. I've always just used the cubase stock Ping Pong delay and it always does it for me. But I'm working on something now where I want a bit more specialized and spatial controls to play around with.

Echoboy & VH Delay have been my two favorite delays for a few years now... VH Delay can do just about anything Echoboy can, but it's often a little quicker/easier to dial in... (TLDR - VH Delay is an awesome companion/alternate delay if you like Echoboy)...

One thing about ValhallaDelay is that it makes some assumptions about how you want your delay taps to work, which is quick but you don't get direct control over placement as what you do is dial in a curve that controls when each of the four taps hit. Most of the time this works but there are some tricks you can't do easily with it. If you need to place taps or repeats at precise times, Relayer is your friend. But it can take longer to set up classic delay styles because it has so many parameters.

Echoboy is kinda in the middle thanks to the tweak panels.

Ah thanks for the recommendation. I'm trying out ValhallaDelay and it has a great sound but I noticed is not as control-friendly. I'll look into Relayer as well.

Hi everyone! Thank you so much for your recommendations and insight! I ended up going for Audio Damage's Other Desert Cities. Loved both it's utility sound for more basic delays but also it's powerful sound-design potential and tweakability for evolving atmospheres and soundscapes. Thank you!

Best always!
