It's here.

M2 Ultra. Up to 192 GB of unified memory. Six PCIe slots.

You can order later today, and it will be available next week. $6999. No word on base storage capacity. It better not be 1 TB or even 2 TB.

No upgradeable memory, and the internal SSD is also most likely not user-upgradable, unfortunately. Still have the PCIe for storage expansion though.

A very underwhelming release IMO. They should have waited for the M3, because the M2 Max / M2 Ultra Studio was also announced today. The only difference between the two is the PCIe expansion, with a $3,000 higher price for the Pro.

The transition is now complete. You can no longer purchase a new Intel Mac from Apple.

I'm surprised they haven't announced a new chip. Like something beyond the M2 Ultra. Maybe with the M3!

Thinking a bit more about this, it's like this Mac Pro is more a dev kit for manufacturers doing PCIe expansions.

Perf wise it's exactly the same as the Studio with the M2 Ultra.

I don't understand how you can call this underwhelming at all
The things this machine is going to be able to perform, will mean some of those who get it not in the need of a 2-year upgrade are looking at a machine lasting a very long time

they are rushing through the whole thing. I'm guessing the VR thing will be the big reveal and have more time

I have more RAM in my 2019 Mac Pro than the top 2023 Mac Pro can handle... ;)

Because 192 GB of unified memory is indeed amazing if you need lots of GPU memory, or have large AI workloads. For us, not so much.

The Intel Mac Pro supported 1.5 TB of RAM, eight times as much.

192 GB is well more than what I will ever need as a hobbyist, but for the pros hoping for a single machine for absolutely massive orchestral projects, this probably won't cut it.

User-upgradeable DDR5 memory as an additional tier between unified RAM and the SSD is something I always thought the Apple Silicon Mac Pro would introduce.

I also think it's underwhelming because of the $3000 charge just for a few PCIe slots. The M2 Ultra Mac Studio has equivalent performance for $3999 versus the $6999 for the Mac Pro. The Mac Pro should differentiate itself with much more than merely PCIe expansion.

Picking up the Mac Studio M2 Ultra. I think the Mac Pro is pretty useless unless you have a really edge case for PCI cards or need gobs of internal storage.
I agree w the Mac Pro being kinda useless (for audio at least) but why the Mac studio ultra m2? id think the max is more than enough? That's what I gathered from the Mac Studio M1 Max vs ultra.

For the 192GB of RAM, doubling the chip is the only way to get there. Also, the Geekbench is likely to be over 30,000 multicore. Which means running a huge orchestral template at super low latency.

oh gotcha yes, Im in the 128gb ram level so most likely the m2 will get there cheaper than before. or at least at 96gb ram. hope it gets to 128gb with the Max.

Anyone who bought the Mac Studio after the last announcement, when do they typically open the Apple Store website back up? I assume after the keynote is over? I'm here clicking refresh, refresh, refresh....

yes, the store gets updates inmedialty after. It'll have a "wait" info and it gets updated in a few minutes to up to 20min.

the new Macs will be ready to ship a week later.

oh boy, new Mac OS ..
...
MacOS Sonoma
...
wouldn't be surprised if the new Mac OS probably spells out the end for Mac Intels. (apple won't say anything of course, just me speculating)
