Cubase - Pro Tools MMC Sync Suddenly Stopped Working???

Hi all,

I am experiencing a very specific but pernicious problem with slaving Pro Tools playback to Cubase.

I have multiple cloned rigs in which Cubase syncs playback with Pro Tools - my issue is one of these rigs suddenly stopped working and I cannot for the life of me figure out why. I can still scrub the playhead within Cubase and Pro Tools responds correctly, but I cannot get Pro Tools to start playback when I press play in Cubase.

I have noticed that on the MIDI monitor on my other rigs, Cubase sends a short MIDI signal immediately after pressing play, which I assume is a start signal. The broken rig shows no such activity, and only shows a signal when I press stop. My suspicion is that the lack of a start signal is the cause of my problem, but I can't find any reason why Cubase is refusing to send a start signal, as I have Always Send Start Message enabled.

All my Project Synchronization Setup preferences and PT preferences are identical to the rigs which are working (and yes external sync is disabled in Cubase), so it has to be something more unusual.

I'm aware this may be an almost impossible problem to solve, but any help in getting me closer to a solution would be hugely appreciated.

Thanks,
L

I had some very strange random behavior after the last Windows update. Fortunately after shutting down and coming back the next day everything seems to be back to normal. Just maybe a hint if you are on Windows.

Sorry should have mentioned I'm on MacOS, but thank you for the quick response Markus!

For anyone experiencing this same issue, it turns out the source of the problem was Cubase's frame rate was set to 29.97 and Pro Tools was 23.976. I changed Cubase to 23.98 and it works perfectly again!

Hi @lhelder17 ,
just came around your thread - good to hear you solved the problem! :)
I 'like to sync ProTools to Cubase aswell, but always have a pretty long delay until ProTools sync.
Do you send MMC from Cubase to ProTools BUT, ProTools is the MTC Master?
Could you send / DM me pictures of your sync setting in ProTools and Cubase please?
Happy to "buy you a coffee!"!

Thanks you very much in advance and best, Karsten

Hi Karsten,

Sure thing. Here's all my sync settings on Cubase and PT.

1-3 seconds delay before Pro Tools starts following playback is normal, but it shouldn't be any longer than that.

Hope this helps!

L
