Introducing: Dark Force Audio - Subversion - Cinematic Tension, Textures and Pads

Dark Force Audio

New Member
Hi everyone!

My name is Tarek Mansur and I have just launched my new company “Dark Force Audio” and have my first library called “Subversion” available now.

It’s full of dark, grinding, tense, wild and sometimes sparkling textures and pads, along with hard hitting braams, dramatic choir pads, guitars, bells, booms, hits, pulses and more.

We have recorded a wide variety of organic and synthetic sound sources for Subversion that are combined into multi-layer instruments. Each multi-layer instrument presents an immersive sonic pallet that takes you on an evolving journey. A single instrument can set the vibe and mood for a whole evocative soundscape. Subversion works with Kontakt Player and is NKS ready.

There is also a $20 off through April 17th! So please check out the first look I have uploaded to the official YouTube channel.
You can grab the library on my website:

www.darkforceaudio.com

I can’t wait to hear from all of you what you think about it.

Kind Regards
Tarek Mansur / Dark Force Audio

Awesome pads! Something wild is going on here! :) Welcome and all the best!

Is there a more in-depth walkthrough coming? Personally, I need to hear more preset examples, see how the engine works (can layers be swapped out for example?), and more info on how many presets we get etc before I drop that much money on a new library like this. The preset organisation could do with some work too, a numbered list isn't the most useful thing if I'm trying to switch between bass presets, for example.

What I've heard does sound good btw!

Thanks for your response and questions! We're glad to hear that you like what you've heard so far. Yes, more videos are coming up. We will be rolling them out soon. So stay tuned!

Here's a bit more info about Subversion and the ideas behind it. Over the years, we have seen many offerings on the market where you are presented with a bunch of individual sounds with almost no FX processing on them. Then, it's up to the purchaser to spend many hours and days combining these sounds into more useful complex patches/multis. It breaks the workflow of a busy composer when they have to stop down for hours to create an evolving soundscape or big pad or drone. We wanted to present a different approach---offering the user a product where big, satisfying, evolving soundscapes have already been designed and are ready-to-go right out of the box, yet you are not stuck with what we have done. The user has control over the various sound layers with volume knobs, and mute and solo buttons. This gives the user a great deal of flexibility when working with a multi-layer instrument. If there's a layer in the instrument you don't want, you can Mute it, and if there's a layer that catches your ear and you want to Solo it, you can easily do that (and it's all automation enabled). (You cannot swap layers inside a Subversion instrument, but it's not hard to load several instruments and Solo various layers and make your own creation. In fact, we hope that people do this! It's quite fun!)

As far as the instruments themselves---there are 68 multi-layer instruments that each have between 2-8 layers. Categories of instruments:
ATMOS - generally non-tonal instruments with a variety of textures that float, haunt, growl, zing, brood and sparkle.
PAD - generally tonal textures with other sound design that are playable as musical instruments.
BRAAM - the pink-colored Braam keys start mellow and droney, but as you raise the mod wheel, things get crazy.
CHOIR - an ambient large choir combined with sound design results in sweeping, dramatic environments.
GUITAR - mellow guitar pluck instruments that feature drones and braams for depth and drama.

There are 6 other instruments that are more elemental in nature:
ELEMENTS - BELLS - we’ve recorded several bells with single hits and repeated ringing techniques.
ELEMENTS - CELLO - non-traditional cello that include multi-bowing techniques.

Finally, 9 TOOLBOX instruments that isolate various types of high impact sounds for quick access.

Total 83 instruments. But, if you were to break out every layer from every instrument into its own patch, it would be hundreds of patches. The focus was not on quantity of patches; the focus was delivering a big fat sound that brings a smile to your face when you press a bunch of keys and move the mod wheel. (Interestingly, one comment we've heard from several people is that it's very time consuming to get through the library because the instruments draw you in and are so fun to play.)

As far as the ordering of the instruments---the library is not a traditional one from the standpoint of delivering many patches of the same kind in a slightly different flavor. Categorizing them into any kind of category was actually very challenging! :) The category listing like "PAD" or "ATMOS" is at the front to guide the user's ear in terms of what to expect in general. However, there's a WIDE variety of sound from one "PAD" or "ATMOS" instrument to the next. So ultimately, the category is only a general indicator that helps you to understand what the patch is before you get into it.

Also, we wanted the user to be able to hear what we loved about the library in an order that would give the user a quick idea of what Subversion has to offer--especially if the user is on Kontakt 7. If you're a Kontakt 7, Komplete Kontrol or Maschine user, the Preview feature is awesome and the way we organized the library allows you to Preview the whole library in one shot without having to shuffle through endless folders, which really is another flow killer.

So, stay tuned---more info about Subversion is coming soon.

@Dark Force Audio thanks for the reply, and I look forward to the walkthrough too. Quick question, are the demo tracks all using subversion only?
Yes, the demos on the website are 100% Subversion sounds. No other sounds used. In the demo playlist, you’ll find both hard hitting tracks, and darker, more mysterious vibes. We want to show that Subversion is not only good for high impact, but also excellent for setting quieter and darker moods. Subversion is great for setting that sparse uncomfortable tone that makes you look over your shoulder—-those slow, patient textures that have subtle elements that hang and twist. Of course, it screams metallic nightmares too if you want that! (And don’t forget the sub-booms that appear on the lowest A-key of an 88-key controller/keyboard on all the multi-layer instruments. It’s so much fun to add a boom whenever you wan to add that kind of dramatic weight in the middle of playing a pad or texture.)

We just put up an eye candy video on the homepage of our site. Check it out! And a walkthrough of the GUI is coming next. (And we’ll add some more demos soon to show off more moods/vibes of Subversion.)

Hi Everyone.

I have a nice long, casual walkthrough of Subversion ready to show you. Yes…it’s 43 minutes long. Many of the demos on the website highlight the big impact sounds Subversion has, but in this walkthrough, I also wanted to show that Subversion offers many kinds of sounds and intensities. I’m new to making walkthrough videos, but I really enjoyed it! I hope it gives you some insight into Subversion!

And don’t be shy, please reach out to us and show us your creations with Subversion! We’d love to hear what you do with it!

Regards.
Tarek

Thanks for the walkthrough :emoji_thumbsup: Another couple of questions.

- Does it include the sample content as wavs?
- Is there any way to transpose a single part?
- Is there access to ADSR for parts or whole?

-The library is fully encoded by NI, so no loose Wavs.
-No transposing a single layer within an instrument. You could easily load two versions of the instrument, mute the layer on one and solo it on the other.
-No ADSR controls in this instrument.

Tiny bit of feedback: from all of the demos and demo videos this sounds great.

I'm exclusively a hobbyist so I don't make any money back when I purchase a library like this. Given that, I found the current price to be a bit out of my range. It is very clear that there is a ton of work, love, and effort in this library so I don't begrudge any price point you want to set, but I thought I would let you know one perspective on this tricky question for product creators. Perhaps later when you have had a chance to recoup costs and maybe decide to offer post-intro discounts I'll be picking this up. I wish you all the best and can't wait to see your future work too!

Hey Tarek. Had a proper watch of your walkthrough this morning, some great sounds in there!

Regarding the wavs, I've bought quite a few trailer style kontakt player libraries which included some or all of the content as wavs in a separate folder. As you'll know, sometimes wavs are easier to use for some elements such as hits, fx etc in this style, especially if you want to mangle them further. It'd be awesome to have these available, whad'ya think?!

Are those trailer style Kontakt libraries distributed and downloaded through Native Access?

Thanks for your respons! I totally understand this price range is not for everyone. Considering what you get for paying $149 (intro $129) is a product full of big, satisfying, evolving soundscapes and are ready-to-go right out of the box. We have also recorded synthesizers that are extremely rare and this contributes to Subversions value and price range. Not many libraries offers these kind of sound sources that Subversion contains meaning the user adds a set of new and exciting atmospheric sound sources. Not to mention a 60 piece choir recorded in Czech Republic. I hope this answers your question.

I can't actually remember, but possibly not - I seem to remember some using pulse and/or their own managers.
