Introducing Musio 1 - The Non-Subscription Option!

Cinesamples-SG

Cinesamples Customer Success Manager
Hello everyone! We are very excited to announce Musio 1, a new addition to the business model for those who don't want a subscription.

Musio 1 grants a perpetual license for all instruments and collections released this year (including the ones listed on our Coming Soon roadmap for 2023), with future upgrades available starting in 2024 when we eventually roll more new additions into this package (and it becomes Musio 2, then Musio 3, etc).

This is following the same model as offers like Native Instruments Komplete and Arturia V-Collection, and you can get Musio 1 for $299 through the end of December 2023 (normal price $399).

Also included in this latest app update (version 1.13) is the first round of Keyswitch instruments, and there are more Keyswitch patches coming soon to other collections that can use them!

I'll address some of the anticipated FAQs in a comment below, and I'll be here to answer any other questions you may have. If you haven't wanted to try Musio before because you know you won't use a subscription service, now's your chance to give it another look!

- How is this different from the Lifetime License?

The Lifetime License automatically includes all future instruments and collections. If you own the Lifetime License you won't need to pay for upgrades to Musio 2 and beyond. You're done giving us money :)

- Will buying Musio 1 automatically cancel my subscription if I have it?

No! You can have both a monthly/annual subscription and a Musio 1 license. Why? Because monthly/annual subscribers will get any new instruments released right when they come out -- no need to wait for an upgrade to the next package to become available! You can cancel your subscription at any time and you will retain access to everything in the Musio 1 package.

- What about app features? Do I have to upgrade to get those?

Nope! App features, including keyswitches, mic positions, UX improvements, and other new/improved elements of the Musio app will always be free to subscribers, Musio 1 license holders, and Lifetime license holders.

- What about updates/improvements to instruments within a Collection that is in Musio 1? Or new instruments that get added to it later?

You will get those! The access that is granted with Musio 1 is at the Collection level, so changes or additions to the instruments in those collections will be yours when they are released.

- Does this mean I can use Musio on an offline computer?

No -- Musio is still a cloud-connected SaaS app that requires a monthly check-in with the service to verify your account. You can use Musio offline as long as you connect to the internet for this check-in, but you cannot use Musio on a completely offline machine.

I'm a bit out of the loop. Do the Musio versions of things like Cinebrass, Cineperc etc contain all of the content, or are they stripped down versions?

Will you still be offering the lifetime license to include all new musio versions (musio 1, 2, 3 etc)?

Depends on what you consider "stripped down" -- it's all the same instruments, articulations, dynamic layers, and round robins. Right now there's only one mic position, but we're adding more soon. There are certain functions in various libraries that depend on Kontakt scripting that aren't available in Musio like the Phrase Builder in Voxos, tempo sync for runs in Hollywoodwinds or Deep Percussion Beds loops, or the double-/triple-tonguing features in CineBrass. We added Keyswitches with this latest build, and you can use your Articulation Sets/Expression Maps feature in your DAW to create a custom way of changing articulations to use one track per instrument instead of one track per articulation. Give it a free try for 30 days and see for yourself!

The Lifetime License option is no longer available through the site, and won't be coming back (sorry, no Black Friday deal on that :emoji_wink:) but if you want it for $999, get in touch with us at [email protected] and we'll get you set up!

This model for permanent licensing of Musio content actually seems to me to be sustainable for the company in a way that the lifetime version seemed not to be. So in that respect I'm pleased to see this, as it seems to put the finances of the Musio part of the business (which seems the future that Cinesamples is headed toward) on more solid footing.

This really does clarify a lot of my questions and concerns for those of us who were early adopters of the lifetime license, being an early adopter myself. I absolutely love seeing the direction this is all going in, especially for those of us like myself who are not for subscription platforms and services and would rather purchase to own what they buy. All I will say is keep it coming Cinesamples, if it continues to carry on this way, this will change everything setting Cinesamples apart from the rest, making it fairer to and for everyone, upwards and onwards I say. #musioforlife

I will say, the idea of a series of purchasable perpetual packages which you can then trial with a short subscription to see if the next version actually contains enough material for someone to get usage out of and to warrant an upgrade feels very welcome, instead of having to guesstimate that.

To be honest, the platform still lacks features which keeps me from embracing it beyond demoing some stuff for which I ended up getting Kontakt versions (please don't forget about the maintenance of these quite yet), but because you do seem to be evolving and iterating it quite nicely and because you now have a non-subscription option, it's definitely on my radar as a potential future purchase, once it reaches a level of feature maturity that I need.

IMO this is how you do subscriptions: alongside a viable perpetual option. That way, occasional users as well as long-term users can use your products.

Thanks for the feedback! Can I ask which features from the Kontakt libraries (besides Mic Positions which we know are coming) are important for us to consider adding? Is it tempo sync, alternate articulation switching, or specific scripted functions (like the Hairpin Creator)? We want to get to the point of parity with our Kontakt libraries, and while we know there are some things that aren't realistic to include in Musio (Voxos Phrase Builder), we have barely scratched the surface of Musio's capabilities and have a lot we can do -- the nice thing about building it ourselves is we can eventually make it do whatever we (read: our customers) want :)

Timestretching / tempo sync is a big one - Collision and Hollywoodwinds are really shadows of their Kontakt selves at the moment. That would be good to see.

Is there a run down vid of how the new keyswitching features work anywhere? I feel like I'm being dumb and have missed it somehow

Mike did a quick video showing this! Essentially, the Keyswitch patches load in with a curated set of articulations to choose from, and you drag-and-drop them on the interface to the key you want to use
