What's new

Pianoteq 8.2 is out

8.2.0 (15/01/2024)
  • Revoicing of all 11 modern grand pianos.
  • Fret buzz sound added to the Classical Guitar instrument.
  • Two new tunings for the guitar: EADF#BE and DADGAD.
  • MIDI sequence transposition added in the sequence context menu.
  • New midimapping for changing the tuning root key.

With just a basic play test of a few familiar instruments there seem to have been some general improvements to the sound, even if the particular piano hasn't been overhauled. Of course, I could be imagining it; but it seems like the changes have a general improving effect aurally.

This sounds much closer to the real thing to my ears. Whatever they've done here is very, very good!

I think the highs sound better than ever, I wish the lows would get a more faithful boost as I think they are the weak point that turns people away from the Pianoteq. I personally love that piano very much and the moment I hear a more faithful sound on the low notes, all the piano samples will be forgotten. I still think that the most faithful piano in Pianoteq is the NY Steinway Square piano except that it is not to everyone's taste as an old model piano.

You probably already thought of this, but have you tried close-miking?
Maybe it gets you closer to the sound you're after.

I'm glad people are saying Pianoteq is sounding better than ever. I couldn't get into it when listening to demos some time back. It often sounded good on its own at first, but after a brief listen, and especially when comparing it to sampled pianos, I felt it sounded a little too unnatural. Others that felt the same sometimes said they couldn't quite put their finger on why. For me, and from memory, it came down mainly to three things: a somewhat middly tone; a default mid-emphasis in the dynamic response (reaching mid-volume too soon); and above all a stereo field that was too simple compared to a real piano sound. But I'm sure I'll explore it again some time and see if I feel any different.

I was one of those people. This update changed my mind.

It still not 100% there, but it’s now officially close enough for me. And that tied with the absolutely wonderful playability that it already exhibited puts it in the win column for me!

Steinway D New York sounds the best to me. Is that a separate purchase? I don't remember.

About the sound not being dry enough, I've noticed that many presets have a short delay/echo effect in the FX section. Do people keep it that way or do they switch off the delay effect?
