What's new

I want THIS Steinway sound

I believe Bruce Liu generally performs on a Fazioli, not a Steinway.

You might want to try the VSL Fazioli, which has excellent clarity and excels in Baroque music. I don't always find it suitable for other genres, but for this type of repertoire it's perfect.

Great recording, but listening through multiple speakers and heads, the sound quality isn't up to the live DG sound. The tone of the the vst and the studio recording ARE quite similar, though! Obviously I'm being REAL picky here; but truth-be-told the latest crop of studio recordings (like this DG one) sets a NEW benchmark which the usual vst piano suspects will want to meet! Some of Jarrett's last recordings used to be my personal bench; but things really have gone up a notch since then.

Is it a Faz or a Steinway? Not sure. Important question.

Well, Vikingur Olafsson is one tough customer. Love'm. (Is Liu in that company? Remains to be seen!)

Little more ambience on this recording than apparent in the Liu. Hamburg STeinway, that's clear. Yes. Stunning audio, even given the extreme limitations of YT audio. Going to listen now via HDef (Deezer), which is better, but oddly never quite as good as lowly CD quality, (much less higher def media). Using a pair of Focal studio SM9 monitors (not pretty, definitely not "contemporary", but lovable).

Yes, this is a tough one to pull off convincing with a sampled piano. This was using the Xperimenta PF2 Fazioli F-278, with a mix weighted towards the room & mid mics, and reverb through Valhalla Room 2.0

Happy to share my settings if anyone is interested.

I like what I hear! Do you recommend this piano? Now it has a pretty interesting price too...

My bad, yet confused with Xperimenta Site. BF promo has FZ for usd 60.
Is this the PF2 you reference ? If so, ready to purchase.

How does it compare to the VSL Fazioli F308?

Yes, some of the recent DG piano recordings are really stunning.

My personal benchmark is the Vikingur Olafsson Rameau/Debussy album - have you heard it?

Beautiful crystalline but warm tone, and superb playing. Here's some Bach recordings by Kimiko Ishizaka on a Bosendorfer 290:

Here's another option with the Xsample Contemporary Steinway B (close + mids mics and built-in reverb):
