My first Microphone - an question about the pickup pattern

A very basic newbie question as I have bought my very first microphone and I am wondering about the cardioid patterns orientation ie if its a toffee apple shape is the big sphere above it and the little sphere at the stick end or is the big sphere perpendicular to and in the same plane as the apples equator with the little sphere also coming out from the equator but in the opposite direction?
