Distracting banner ads on the forum

I don’t mind static ads on the forum; that’s fine.

Ads that are changing constantly however - that’s another story.

The eyes get distracted whenever a sudden change happens like that.

How does everyone else think about these ads?

If it’s just a me-problem then I’ll handle it on my end, no problem 🙂

Edit:
I’m using Dark Mode all the time. Then blinking ads etc. become much more visible compared to on a white background.

I find the forum browsing experience pretty smooth. I am not bothered either. Or maybe because I've experienced far worse on my Android devices...
 
Especially at night it's hard to read when there's always a LIGHT ON LIGHT OFF blinking.
Then I zoom into the text window so that the ads are out of screen.

There's been the occasional flashy and obnoxious ad in the past, but the current line-up seems pretty tame to me? I know Mike has set some visual guidelines in the past to minimise the annoying-ness.
Overall I find VI-C to be less flashy and annoying than most other parts of the internet.
Have you tried visiting a recipe website or a tech blog these days? Good lord....

It just hit me it’s probably because I’m using Dark Mode.
That makes blinking ads stand out more compared to on a white background.

But it’s fine, I’ll solve it on my end 🙂
 
I like the dark mode, and some of these ads, for some reason, are RGB 255,255,255 white.

Just noticed a new one where the typography is s t r e t c h e d instead of selecting a different font style or point size. My disappointment is immeasurable and my day is ruined.
 
We try to restrict obnoxious ads, although we don't have defined rules, since "annoying" is subjective. Although for the 160x600 forum sidebar ad, the rule was originally for no animation at all, since that ad stays with you as you scroll down the page. We've loosened that and now allow for "subtle" animation, though. Admittedly, a few advertisers have pushed that one further than I'd like, so I may change those.

Which ads are bothering you? We try to reign in ads that blink too much, but I don't handle the ads myself anymore, so I'm not as aware as I used to be, although I'll see one from time to time that I'll ask the advertiser to change.

In fact ... anyone else remember this one?

As a general rule, I think advertisers do themselves a disservice by using animation without smooth transitions between images, on a forum. It gets the wrong kind of attention. Most here, however, seem to understand that principle very well and behave. :)
 
I know this is an older topic but I thought I'd add this because I was particularly bothered by it today. The Slate+Ash Auras sidebar that completely changes colors every second is extremely annoying, perhaps the worst offender (especially given that it's a sidebar, and thus you can't scroll past it). It's probably the "flashiest" ad I can recall seeing on this site.

I'd like to support the site, but that ad alone is egregious enough that it made me turn my adblocker back on indefinitely for this site. Just having it in the periphery for more than a few seconds honestly starts making me anxious and very distracted. Clearly I'm in the minority though, so whatever ... just thought I'd mention it regardless.

(for reference it's the one that very rapidly cycles between these three frames)

Just go check out many other sites which apparently are worse ad-wise - then you’ll feel much better!

Like KVRaudio. You literally can't click on either side of the forum or you get sent to whoever is paying to fill that space. It isn't terribly visually intrusive, but that's actually annoying. Can't even middle click scroll. Don't mess with navigation feng shui!
 
I hate complaining, but the OT banner is just making the forum difficult to nav. This bright Orange, Red and Yellow, on the side top and bottom is just too much. Can't it be toned down some color-wise, so it's not so much LOOK AT ME!!! ?

Yes this one is super obnoxious.
