What's your contribution to:

Piano music that sucks but which has crossed the "art" threshold.

(maybe I was too rude, I deleted my contribution. But the amount of garbage out there these days is astonishing - it's almost as if people have stopped composing as a creative process, but throw out 4 chords like pop music in 1963. Especially the 'art' piano music, its has fallen beyond basic standards).

I was thinking it's fair to say this out loud with examples, but I guess we just leave it here. Lets pretend its good.

Can we get honest comment from you (of course, age affects physical presentation, but how about composition):

I don’t hear anything that “sucks” in Glass’s Opening; only beautiful simplicity. Is your criterion for a piece of music to be worthy of enjoyment, interest and/or admiration that a certain complexity threshold must be reached?

What is your criterion for what you consider to be artistically valid and musically interesting? Mine is either does it move me on an emotional level, or does it interest me on an intellectual level. Both are valid.

Bearing in mind, you will get as many different answers to that question as the number of people you ask.

That piece is something a 6 year old would do. Now make an analogy to paintings to make it more clear.

I think you’d need to show me a real example of a 6 year old writing a piece of music like that (in a deliberately minimalistic style with balance and restraint), rather than just assert it and then show a child’s drawing as if that proves your point. It doesn’t.

Music isn't fact based. It is opinion . . . and, everyone is entitled to their opinion. So, why create a public list of opinions? It serves no purpose.

Total garbage is another word. And we got recent piano music full of this uninspiring shit.
To be sure there is a lot of recent piano music that does well on streaming that is basically nothing but what one of my old teachers would call "70s power-ballad chord progressions" and is actually shit, but Glass is not that. (It's a useful exercise, if you think Glass is shit, to actually try to write like him. Not at all as easy as it might seem.)

I don't know why people keep engaging with this dude when he posts things like this
I can only speak for myself, but sometimes I feel the need to respond when something is said that I strongly disagree with. It is a valid point though to consider what the point is when someone repeatedly posts things that are similar in tone to this post. It’s not as if it will be productive.

Music doesn’t have to be difficult to play or compose, or even follow some set of “rules” in order to move the soul of the listener. That’s part of what makes music magical and universal.
Yea, but there is too much of the Am-F-G-C invention with an arpeggio twist out there. Can they not at least throw in one or two pieces like Cavatia in between the garbage and noise - is that too much asked for? Nope, not a chance. We are force fed this below the average garbage.

And btw, I cant even shoot sharp here, bcs Id get immediately banned - or at least - all deleted if I start to shoot with sharps here. But one can deduct from the replies that boredom is one reason for the shit art these days.

I can kind of relate to the OP though... I've often wondered if the reason why piano music like Einaudi's for ex. is so overwhelmingly successful is because it gives the illusion one is listening to something "classical" and serious while feeling no fatigue because the music is so immediately digestible...
