Hamburg Steinway Model D - MIDI to Audio update

CGR

Pianist, Composer & Arranger
It’s been some time since I posted about this service, and a lot of work has occurred this year upgrading our recording facilities and the MIDI to Audio production service.

Here’s what has transpired:
  • A new custom-built room for Steinway piano recording
  • Upgraded signal path and improved microphone setup
  • Soon to be re-launched website offering a more streamlined process, with the option to monitor our Hamburg Steinway model D playing your MIDI file in real-time
  • Simplified pricing structure, and pricing options for longer form piano tracks
Also, it has been decided that as of early 2024, pianoproducer.com will focus solely on our acoustic Hamburg Steinway Model D MIDI to Audio production (no sampled piano options).

We are also offering studio hire for “in person” recording sessions, where live piano performances can be simultaneously captured as audio & midi, enabling post-recording midi editing and re-recording.

We are excited about this next stage, and look forward to many collaborations with musicians across the globe.

Cheers & Season Greetings,
Craig & Allan

Hi, sounds really great!
Maybe I'm misunderstanding ... do you offer an automated Steinway model D to 'transduce' midi to recordings in a new studio? If so: What mechanics are you using? PianoDisc? QRS? PNOmation?

The Steinway will play any standard MIDI file, and can be adjusted or corrected prior to the recording session. We preview each file to ensure the most natural result.

The MIDI system fitted to the piano is a high resolution ‘Live Performance Model LX’ unit, which features both MIDI playback and recording capabilities. The unit is connected to a Mac, with the MIDI files playing from Logic Pro. It can either be a MIDI sequence played or created in a DAW and exported as a MIDI file, or a MIDI file saved from a performance on a digital piano. Best results are achieved by using a weighted, hammer action keyboard.

Our recordings utilize premium mics, pre-amps & converters: Schoeps MKIV (close mics) & Neumann KM184 (room mics) > Benchmark PRE420 > RADAR Studio A-D > ProTools HD.
