Best used iPad Pro - StaffPad and Logic Pro?

I’m new to StaffPad and I’m completely sold on this program. I’m using iton a first gen iPad Pro with 16.4 and an Apple Pencil 1. I’ve had a few glitches and got support - I think some of it was ‘beginner problems’ though.

At the same time, I need to put logic Pro on the iPad Pro, but that would require an update to iOS 17.0. (cannot upgrade 1st gen iPad to 17.0) - must use 2nd gen or later

I’ve been doing some research, have. read that a third generation iPad Pro would work well for StaffPad -

What’s your opinion? The new iPad pros so expensive but if theres a really good reason I could pay more for a certain generation. I’m willing to get Apple Pencil too, and possibly iPad Pro 11 instead of 12.9.

I have a 2020 iPad Pro, and StaffPad works well. The thing you have to fear is losing Apple support as you already have on your gen 1. So the newer, the better. If I could find something heavily discounted, I wouldn't hesitate getting anything back as far as 2018, but to go pre M1 would have to be really cheap. I have a 12.9, but I wouldn't be opposed to an 11. You can see less, but it's easier to hold.

If you're really planning to use Logic Pro, that will be your limiting factor. RAM is your biggest concern. So that probably means newer. Rumor has it that M3s are coming in March with more RAM.

I’m a songwriter so I would use Logic Pro to record vocals and record some backing tracks but I’m not a producer- of cours

The M1 and later iPad Pros have thunderbolt ports on them. On my M1 ipad Pro 11 I plug in a OWC Thunderbolt 4 dock which allows me to charge the ipad, plug in a host compliant usb audio/midi interface, a Roland SP404 MK 2, an Elektron Syntakt, a 2tb nvme drive and a midi keyboard all at the same time. The lower end iPads make it difficult or impossible to do this.

I bought a used 2018 iPad Pro 12.9" a couple of years ago with 256 gig. It' been fantastic and has no problem with StaffPad. Except, the 'piano transcribing over microphone' doesn't really work. You'd probably need an M1 iPad for that. I'm fine without that feature myself.

Am thinking of adding Logic Pro, seeing as I could see it might be pretty handy. I use Logic ProX on my main computer system.

A good place to shop is:

Another consideration: the 12.9" M1 iPad Pro (which I have) is heavy, so that be a consideration depending on how you plan to use it.

Of course with Staff Pad I’d enjoy recording more instrumentation than I do now. So, the M1

I think I'll want the piano transcribing over microphone feature a lot. So, looks like I need to find a 5th generation ipad pro 12.9. Everyone has such great comments ... Does anyone have a suggestion for a small MIDI keyboard controller that travels well? (size, weigth?) full size keys not absolutely necessary, but must connect to ipad pro.

Thanks, I've seen their adds here and there, haven't used them yet.

Thanks for the heads up.... I'lve been using an iPad Pro 12.9 and it's slightly heavier than the ipad ro 12.9 5th gernation. I plan to use it to travel with... composing with Staffpad, create demos with Logic Pro (should've mentioned I also need a microphone and audio interface to travel with...I have these things for my laptop, and perhaps I therefore have what I need already. (I have not actually purchsaed the pieces for this, and hooked them up)
