Dorico Film Score Template

PAS

Composer, Orchestrator, Arranger
This one is for Dorico Pro users! I wanted to post about this here since some of you may not have known about it yet.

I made my personal film scoring template available to the public a while back, and composers all over the world have been using and enjoying it. It’s the same template I use in all of my personal scoring and orchestration work, and the template that I give to all of my film scoring students.

You can find the template here. It'll be on sale until Feb 10, 2024.

You can watch the overview video here.

Let me know if you have any questions about it!
I offer active support and free updates for life to all customers.

Peace!

Looks like a very well thought-out template. One's feathers get ruffled pretty quickly, however, when seeing $19.99 (sale price $14.99) in the video and then discovering $49.95 (sale price $39.95) on the website.

That’s understandable.

But now the template comes with two orchestra sizes instead of the original single orchestra size when the template first launched.

The original price was also during an introductory period.

How long was the intro period? That video was just posted on Dec 22.

I bought it last month, I think it's a really great template. It gets updated on a pretty regular basis too. Already another update came out since I bought it.

I had my eye on this template for a week. Was $19.99 up until today I believe. Wish I would have just bought it lol.

@PAS I used your Template for my latest Arrangement. Well done. Liked the big Tempo Markings etc. But could you explain your workflow concerning the Percussions. This was a bit strange to me. As well as the Naming of the Percussion Staves.

I’ve got two “kits” set up - metals and drums. Metals will contain your cymbals, triangle, etc. Drums contains snare and bass drum.

All of the melodic percussion is held by a single player and shows on the score as you add notes to each part.

In layout options on the full score, I’ve change the staff label of the percussion parts to display their player name (Percussion) instead of the instrument name.

This is standard practice on studio scores, but any of this can be changed to fit your personal workflow.

If you’re trying to get something specific, just let me know! I’ll help you set it up.

Thanks a lot for your quick answer. Concerning the Percussion: Do you use "Legend for sounding Instruments" each time you write a Note for a new Percussion Instrument? And if so: Is there a way to use this command for the hole Percussion Stave? And is there a way to automatically generate Instrument Changes "to Cymbal", "to Mark Tree" etc. for the Player with this Method? I am new to this Way of Writing for Percussion.

Is there a way to Copy the Bar number Stave to other Scores i have written already?

Thanks again for this nice Template!

I'm glad you're enjoying it!

I personally use "Legend for Sounding Instruments" whenever there's a new entrance on the score. I've created a custom key command (⌘+L) that makes quick work of this. Unfortunately, there is no automatic way (yet) to get labels on the score for the percussion configuration that I have. I could split each percussion instrument out individually, but I much prefer having them all contained within a kit so that they appear on a 5-line stave together.

So "Legend for Sounding Instruments" is the next best thing at the moment.

In regards to copying the Top and Bottom Guides into other projects, you can save those as defaults! That way you can use them in any Dorico project. There are two basic steps to the process: 1. Saving as defaults, 2. Copying layout/font settings. I'll put the details below, and I've included screenshots for each step.

STEP 1. With my template file open, go to Library < Instruments
STEP 2. Save "TOP GUIDE" and "BOTTOM GUIDE" as default instruments
STEP 3. With my template file open, go to Library < Instrument Families
STEP 4. Save "TOP GUIDE" and "BOTTOM GUIDE" as default instrument families
STEP 5. In your new project, set "Bar Numbers" in Layout Options to match my template
STEP 6. In your new project, set the "Bar numbers (score)" Paragraph Style to match my template

That's it! Now you can add the guide staves into any Dorico project in the future.

Let me know if you have any other questions!

Thanks a lot for these detailed set up Steps. Worked very well, but I must have missed something. Everything is showing up, just the design of the Bar numbers is nicer in your Template. I can not find the Parameter for this. Made a Screenshot. Left Side my attempt :) , right Side your Template.

You're almost there! Just check every detail of my "Bar numbers (score)" Paragraph Style from my template and make sure you enact that exactly. It should replicate it, but if you're still having some issues, feel free to email me your project file! I'll take a look at it to see where the discrepancy is.

Alternatively, you could drag and drop my template file into your new project by using Library Manager. Then just make sure that the Paragraph Styles settings are imported to the new project.
