Halloween Hangover Scoring Challenge - Martin Heidenreich Music / Implied Music

Don’t think Martin or Chris have posted this here, but thought I’d spread the word.
Thank you Les for sharing. Would have done it myself this weekend as there is still more than 1 week left to score those 55 seconds
I know it is not their fault, but I want to slap whoever designed the YT algorithm to nudge people into having these ridiculous thumbnails.
Not a fan of those funny faces neither, normally I don't use them on my channel. This was simply my best attempt to look scared...looks like i failed magnificently 😂 will try harder next time
That sounds and look interesting!=)
Give it a try, would be great to have you on board 😊

Here is my entry.

I always wanted to score for a suspense video, and I found this contest clip very inspiring!=)
Thank you for the opportunity, it was really fun!

Anyone from the forum participated? I'd love to listen to your entries!
As always, honest feedback and suggestions are very appreciated.

@Manfred , @diemcarpe , @Jonas Hallstrom , wow, guys, amazing entries!! Each of you had your own individual approach!

@Manfred, wow, I never thought that someone behind the camera in the beginning can be an animal-looking creature (wolverine?). But this absolutely makes sense with the accellerated movements! Really great sound-design! Very creepy.

@diemcarpe, absolutely loved how you created spooky strings! May I ask what did you use for that? Really cool idea of using the whispering! Great atmosphere!

@Jonas Hallstrom , I was immediately taken away by the beautiful strings harmonies in the beginning! I really liked that you had rather more mysterious approach, than horror. It's very beautiful musically.
By the way, your icon colors match perfectly the video thumbnail=)

Great score. Hold’s much mystery. The child laughter at the start is perfect too.

I missed this until last night so, rather last minute, here's my entry:

As I had very little time today, I decided to do something a bit different. No midi, no keyboard, no virtual instruments. I used the sound of the bolt being drawn from the film for most of the sound design, in addition to a hardware synthesiser (played without midi or a keyboard). And as soon as the video was uploaded I spotted a mixing error, of course!

I look forward to hearing what the rest of you did!

Aleatoric strings plus modulation. I like to make music loud, scary. Thank your for kind words.

I loved you approach too. Very spooky and cinematic. Fun fact, we did almost identical composition in the end, tension riser into scream.

Don't know if you remember Bee, but it was you who came up with the great idea for us to implement the on/off Pitchbend option on individual tracks in our Kontakt instruments.

You suggested it for guitars, but we have used it to make quarter-tone music on the Feathersome Strings library.

How to do it :

You click on a channel-strip (access through the track-name above mix-track slider), and then you click on the PB button to turn off pitchbend on the selected track.

The amount of Pitch-bend can be set in the settings view. We love setting the PB-range to just 1 semitone for better control of quarter-tone tunings.

The result is a string-bending aleatoric dissonance when you move the Pitch-bend. Very cool on Nodal Double-bass Quartet also. Some tracks stay in tune, while others make the pitch-move.

I remember it fondly: I had a good idea once!

This use of it is great for subtle unease.

Same with me, @Bee_Abney! I’d planned what instruments I would use a few weeks ago, but then got sidelined. Did mine pretty much “last minute”, but then Kontakt wasn’t behaving, and I had problems rendering! Ended up with some sound design and 2 VSTs. Mine definitely sounded better playing back on the laptop before being uploaded, and not enough time spent on mixing. That’ll teach me not to rush it!

You have absolutely turned in a proper film score. And the extra audio elements mean that you have effectively completed the film aurally. I really like what you've done here because it is so professional, effective, and enhances and never distracts from the images.

I have one tip for this kind of competition, though. Make sure that you EQ the music out of the way of the existing audio effects. There was only one in this case - the bolt on the door being drawn. You might have addressed this, but I think it could have sounded out a little clearer. (I don't know how well this works on my entry, but I did the following. Once the music was fixed, I bounced that out as a single track. I then used EQ to make sure that all of my contribution was out of the way of the bolt. I'd do something similar if the existing sounds ran throughout, but I might work on it more whilst mixing my music if there was dialogue and such.)
