Time flies so fast... Here is the Ryan Leach October 2023 Composing Competition announcement!

Deadline: October 31st
More details in the video below.

The new thing in this contest - it won't be Ryan this time, who will choose the finalists!

I personally was anticipating some dark-spooky Halloween-ish art, and I already had some idea in mind, but this art is very different. It's very beautiful!

Hey Gedren,

thanks for posting. I always miss these things. This time I will finally participate :)

Good luck to everyone.

Here is my entry

Really makes me want to go outside and hunt something :). I'm going to need to try that midi visualizer sometime in the future. I was going to ask what you used, but it looks like you put a link in the video description.

Wow, you already completed your entry! Congrats!:)
It's a really great entry - I absolutely love the mix, the orchestra sounds really beautiful! I feel the adventurous, uplifting mood! I just relistened to it several times, very enjoyable! Good luck to you!

I guess I'll skip this contest, as I have lots of projects to complete this month asap. But I'll listen to all the entries here!

Apparently I was really inspired by this picture and was able to put something together in a couple days. Also, I knew that most of the rest of my October was going to be pretty busy and I needed to get this done before everything took off if I wanted to do it at all.

@FabIV, @blender505, woah guys, are you cyborgs or something?!..)) You are so productive!! I should be as diligent as you!

@blender505, fantastic composition!! It kept my high interest for the whole time! I like this kind of sneaky "escaping" mood in the beginning - the next short syncopation part going then to the brightest active part was super cool! It was unexpected, but fits perfectly, absolutely loved it! Personally for me the ending was a bit unexpected. I love the drop in the end, but was expecting some kind of last big hit in the end (some kind of fast loud passages going up maybe). But it's just my personal taste. I like your idea of the "arch" form - going back to where it started.
Best luck to you! Fantastic job! :)

Thanks. Yea I always try to keep things transparent. The Alma-Visualizer works quite simple and is worth a try. For The final Video I use Davinci Resolve, since it is easier to blend Pictures Midi and Sound ;)

Thanks, Gedren, this means a lot. Yeah I wasnt sure for what style to go, so I mixed some things, and worked quite well in the end.

Great track, I love how lively this whole piece is. Mysteriously in the beginning and so filimic when it comes to the "chase". well done and good luck with your entry :)

Haha, no not at all, just perfect timing for the start. there was a public holyday and some time to spare :D

I'll give it a shot. I actually just started using DaVinci Resolve. Not quite use to it yet, but it seems pretty powerful.

That's your choice;) That's what's cool about this contest - people can share very different interpretation of the same art.
Sorry, I deleted my comment because when I entered the art, I saw in the description that it's two brothers stealing food from their uncle, and I didn't see that you had replied. I understand what you're saying, and it makes a lot of sense. Looking at the picture closely, Japan doesn't make sense, haha. It's probably the USA or Europe.

I had a similar idea as @blender505 as far as sneaky but went a little further with it to call them bumbling thieves. There are still some details I need to work on with this but essentially it's done. Appreciate any feedback. (I think the brass get a little turbulent at times and the string/woodwind runs need some attention at the very least).

Very nice. It narrates a story very nicely. The mockup sounds very good.

I really like your writing on this. Sounds like a classic animated movie. From a mockup standpoint, yeah the brass does feel a little static. It depends on the libraries you're using, but for me on this type of writing, I think I would tend to detach notes in the brass more and then pull back the dynamics a little on each note after the initial attack. That might help tame them a bit. You might be able to see it a little bit in my mockup after the 40s mark or so. Hopefully that helps some.

Time to call it a day :

Any kind of feedback is welcome.
As usual, i choose a narrative approach to the composition so the structure is weird.
It seems that the main challenge is always how to keep it under 90 seconds. (Yes the video is more than 90 seconds, but my mp3 entry respects that.)

Now that I finished my piece, it's time to listen to others' entries.

Wow ! Great use of orchestral colors and what a mood ! Love it from start to finish.

Absolute fantastic job. Only the clarinets at 0:26 stick out a little to the front. But wow, really felt like on the last concert I went. Very well done

Thanks ! That's very encouraging as I was quite impressed by the production of your entry (and your solid orchestration).
I agree for the clarinets, I already pulled them back but I always struggle with them. I need to take time to fix it in my template.

My entry, never sure if I have finished or not!! Happy for any feedback. My focus was on the uncle chasing his nephews with his pitchfork. Felt a bit hillbilly to me - ha ha.
