Hello, as per the rules of the competition:
You can use the following instruments:

Strings 31 [10-8-6-4-3]
Woodwinds 8 [2-2-2-2]*
Brass 10 [4-2-3-1]
Timpani
Piano
Harp

Auxiliary Percussion, Synths and ethnic instruments can be used as MIDI/synth prelays.

*The second player can also play Piccolo, English Horn, Bass Clarinet, and/or Contrabassoon

** You can also use all sound effects that you own.

thx! but you mean sound effects as a folley for the image or as sound design for the music? It would be good to be able to add folley to the muted scene.

This is a music composition competition, you can of course add foley effects but this won't make a difference in the final decision of the judges - they will only listen to the composition and its relation to the scene and acting.

Sorry if this is a dumb question, but just trying to understand what counts as auxilary instruments, could for example Bells, anvil, Bass drum/taiko do they count?

I'm quite new to this so I genuinely don't know.
 
Yes - everything that is outside the ensemble we’re recording as first place prize. Those instruments have to be provided as .wav stems. in case you win the competition.

Had a lot of fun with this and was a good overall experience. Didn't win but was an awesome experience nonetheless for a newbie like me. Contests have been the rare times I've gotten to practice writing to film in th few months I've started doing this so thank you.
